So, i feel like this thread was made somewhere, but i can't find it so i figured i'd start it just in case there isn't one.

We have a whole thread about where in the library people study, but i know that not everyone studies in the library.
So, other than the library, where is your favorite place to study?

I think that my current favorite place (it changes regulary because i get bored easily) is Carma's cafe, which is just off campus. It's halfway between campus and where i live, so i can go there easily between classes, and when it's not busy it's nice to just site with a mayan hot cocoa (at least in the winter) and do some work.

During my first three years at Hopkins, I enjoyed studying in the library often. You can read the library thread to see my preferences. I now have my own bedroom, though, plus I live in the Homewood apartment building--which is a farther walk from the library than the dorms where I lived as a freshman and sophomore and the off-campus apartment where I lived as a junior. Therefore, I study in my room often--and I'm quite productive! I now tend to study in the library only during the day, in between classes.

I just went to Chocolate Tea for the first time last week - it's this little cafe about a block off campus.  It was quiet, had great food, and wasn't nearly as crowded as Starbucks, so I feel like I'll be going there much more often to study.  On campus, I like studying in the Levering Lounge which is basically a big room right next to the Pura Vida Cafe with a bunch of couches and comfy chairs.

I think my favorite places are kind of unconventional, since I never really use the library at all!  They all work really well just the same though.

- One World Cafe.  I live in the apartment building right over One World so it's super convenient, but they also have great coffee and perfect seats both inside and outside.

- Chocolatea.  It's right around the corner from my apartment so I have convenience here too, but their soup and coffee are phenomenal.  The atmosphere is very cozy but also scholarly - kind of what I imagine a study/library in a professor's house might be like.

- Hop Stop {or "Levering Lounge," as it is now called}.  It's this huge room in Levering Hall that has been completely revamped, with new couches, chairs, etc.  It's so bright and refreshing - it's a great place to stop in between classes.

- My bed.  Nothing beats being comfy, warm, and in pajamas while you're studying or doing homework!

If I am really looking to get down to business I'll go to one of the quiet study levels of the library.  Otherwise, I am a big fan of the 4th floor hallway in building A.  It's only a few feet away and miraculously quiet!

It really depends on where I am/what I'm doing.

For long hours of crash studying:
B-Level.  Everyone always talks about D level, but I only went there once just to see what the deal was.  There are these nice little cubicles on B where its like you are in your own little study world.  When I go, I only bring books...no laptop with Facebook or any other distractions.

For laundry studying:
The computer cluster in the AMR 1 basement.  I'm only here once a week, for about an hour and a half.  Basically, it just happens to be right across the hall from the laundry room.  So I go down with my bag of laundry and detergent and my backpack full of books.  While my laundry is being cleaned, I'll sit down and get some work done.  Its pretty quiet, with just the low hum of the machines in the next room, and if you run into people in your class down there they are more than happy to do some work with you.

For group studying:
Anywhere! Really, I don't have much of a favorite.  There are so many places, from just meeting up in someones room to the beach to the library.  It doesn't matter much, anywhere where you can gather in a group is a good place for group study in my opinion.

Nick - I really miss that computer lab across from the laundry room!  That was so convenient!  I get zero work done while I do laundry this year.

Charles Commons has so many study rooms!  There are three on the fourth floor alone, and there are a lot of chairs and a small library in the lobby.  I get a lot more done here than I did living in the AMRs last year.

Nick - AMR I is also great for laundry studying because there's no internet down there (aka no distractions!)

I'm trying to keep my desk as a desk this year. Last year, it just turned into a giant storage receptacle, and wasn't actually usable as a desk. I'm trying to change that this year, and so far (and by that I mean the last week and a half), it's been quite successful. I've decorated my desk with tons of pictures, so now it's actually an appealing place to work.

For the library, I don't usually go below B-level (C-level during the winter, because B was freezing!, and never to D because it scares me). I like using B-level when I want my own desk, but I also like being around people on M/A-level.

When it's nice out, I like to study outside - the President's Garden, the pretty garden area over by Mason, and Wyman Quad are all nice places.

Ok, I decided that Levering Hall is just not a productive place anymore.  Those couches are just way too comfortable, and the food and coffee at the Pura Vida Cafe is so good and so distracting!  Everytime I go there to study I end up just sitting (and almost falling asleep) on those couches for an hour or two while I debate what food I'm going to buy next at Pura Vida.  Maybe I should stick to Gilman or the library.

I agree with you, Sarah! Plus, at this time of year they start playing Christmas music and, really, who can concentrate in that kind of environment.

I have to say, however, that I owe my improved study habits to Gilman Hall. I kid you not, the Hut has been extremely conducive to my productivity. I cannot study anywhere else but there, so thank you to Hopkins for opening it up during my hardest academic year yet! I joke with my friends that my grades are higher because of Gilman, though I'm starting to believe that that's actually pretty true.

My favorite is B level in the lib. Like Nick, I thought I'd study more on D level but I discovered that I get terrible phone reception there and that is a problem (yes, I admit I use my phone too much...even while doing homework). I like to study with my friends, so we often study in the group study rooms, which are small study rooms that will fit around 4 - 6 people. It's perfect! Also, when I want to take a break, I just run up to Cafe Q in the lib and they have the BEST coffee there. It's very convenient!

I have several favorite places to study. B level makes me SO productive, it's insane. (Although sometimes when I share a cubicle with my friends it doesn't work so well...) I also really love The Hut (the reading room in Gilman). It was just re-done and has the most amazing ambiance.

Definitely the Gilman atrium. The natural light in there is really nice, and I think my attention span is better when I study there. Something about being closed underground in the library doesn't appeal to me as much... Also, the little study 'alcoves' on the second floor of Gilman that overlook the atrium are really nice if you are alone or with 2/3 other people and want to study somewhere in between the murmuring noise level of the Gilman atrium or the silence of the Hut.

The Gilman Atrium is definitely my favorite place to study! The natural light is amazing and I can always focus in the light, friendly atmosphere. Considering most of my friends also enjoy studying at the atrium, it can sometimes be difficult to get work done :)
