How did you decide on your major?

Just like Cate and many others have already said, it is so crucial to explore different areas of study in college!  I came here thinking that I only wanted to take science and Spanish courses, but now I absolutely love the English classes that I'm taking to fulfill the writing requirement, and I also want to start exploring the public health classes because I keep hearing all these great things about the public health major!  Even if you think you might know what you want to do, don't let that constrain you.

Freshman year, I was dead-set on majoring in Molecular/Cellular Biology.. that is, until I got an e-mail about the new program in Global Environmental Change and Sustainability. The choice, for me, was obvious; I declared GECS the end of Freshman year and haven't looked back since. The Earth and Planetary Sciences department has some of the smartest and most helpful professors at Hopkins. I am extremely pleased with my decision to study GECS and am grateful for the opportunities the EPS department has afforded me.

I actually just wrote a blog on how I decided on my major, and how I'm not a Computer Science major even though many, many people think I am. Check it out! http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/guest/2011/03/no-im-not-a-comp-sci-major/

I was undecided when I came to Hopkins, so I spent my freshman year taking courses in a wide range of majors. I knew little to nothing about Public Health before I came to Hopkins, but after taking an intro-level PH class on a whim, I knew I had found the major for me. I'm so glad I registered for Intro to Public Health at the last minute!

I've known since pretty much elementary school that I've wanted to do something with computers, hence the whole computer science major.  In the last few years of high school, I became interested in business, finance, and economics and hence the econ major.  No real cool stories or anything like that...both have just been things I've been interested in for a while.

It changed around a lot. I've always liked most subjects (math, science, language, and history)  In sophomore year of high school, I really wanted to be an international studies major. I read a book explaining what a lot of majors meant (class-wise, career-wise, etc.) and I realized I liked the international part, but not really the studies part. (I later took Comparative Government in senior year and really liked it, but realized that is not what I would want to do for four years). I really liked business since I was little, so I was thinking of being an accounting major since I had taken an accounting class.

But then my teacher nominated me for this science, technology, and math program where each month we got to go on a field trip to different science careers. They talked about being an engineering  major and I thought "Wow! I like math! I like science! Hurray I like engineering!"

Then, exploring schools and talking to different professors from different engineering disciplines, I realized that I wanted to do a more science-y engineering. I then worked over the summer in a Materials Science Lab and realized I wanted to work with biomaterials and pharmaceuticals. I looked at the BME at Hopkins, but realized that I didn't really like all the computer-y stuff (sorry Nick!). When I went to the ChemBE presentation, I fell in love. It was science-y and interesting and prepped you for careers in pharmaceuticals and biomaterials. [/rant]

Sorry for rambling on! It's a long story- but I'd definitely suggest taking a wide variety of classes in high school, so you can see what you're interested in and what you don't want to study. Talk to professionals in many different fields to see what you want to do. :)

I had a hard time deciding what I really wanted to do. In high school, I absolutely loved all of my classes (I'm not kidding) - from history to french to science. But I started to realize that I found myself really enthusiastic and passionate with anything that was related with politics and the environment. Hence, it's my hope to pursue something that has to do either with international politics, the government, the environment, and/or developing countries. An idea I have is to double major in International Studies and Global Environmental Change and Sustainability. Or, perhaps major just in International Studies with an environmental politics concentration. I just know that I want to pursue a major that will allow me to help our world in some way. The nice thing about Hopkins is that there is a LOT of flexibility in taking classes and there's no core curriculum. We have a lot of independence in choosing our classes as well as a lot of opportunities offered to us. Who knows what I'll end up doing - we'll find out!

I chose Neuroscience because the program looked really interesting here. I recently decided to double major in Political Science and Neuroscience, however, because I wanted a balance of humanities and science courses. I found it difficult to only take science classes because there was no variety in (for example) what or how I had to study. I took Expo and am currently taking Intro to Fiction and Poetry, and realized that I really do well when I have a good mix of classes. I also really enjoy the fact that I can dedicate an entire day to my research at JHMI. That allows me to distance myself from my classes and really apply what I am learning.

Overall, I think choosing a major involves several things. First, learning what you have a natural propensity to thrive in is important. Obviously you want to do well in your chosen major. Second, it is important to learn what specifically is required from each major and see whether you are willing to complete everything. Taking a look at the course catalog, while inundating at first, can be a great way to take a look at what is offered and what looks interesting to you. Last, I think it is important to consider what you are really passionate about.

You might be undecided at first, then take a bunch of classes in a department you really like, and realize that you are on the path to becoming (for example) and Archaeology major. The best part about college is being able to take many classes in an area and then decide. There is no rule that says you have to be sure of what you want to do. For all I know, I will change my major- there's plenty of time to figure things out!

I applied to Hopkins as a history major since I'd enjoyed my history classes in high school. Freshman year, I took a history class, as well as other classes in the International Studies area (language, econ, history, and poli sci), and I thought I wanted the interdisciplinary aspects that International Studies had. Fast forward to the end of freshman year...I HATED microeconomics. I like macro in high school, but micro was just a bad experience for me. I'd still declared IS at my advising meeting, so I figured I'd take a break from econ and just take classes that interested me. Sophomore fall semester involved me taking several more political science classes...and realizing that what I really wanted to do was take political science classes. Sophomore spring - three upper level poli sci electives that I love, and me finally turning in my change of major form!
One of the big moments for me was looking at the course catalog for political science, and realizing I would be happy taking practically all of the classes offered! I also love that the poli sci major allows for lots of flexibility - we have to take 4 core courses (one each for American government, comparative government, international relations, and political theory) and then 9 electives (which can include senior thesis). It gives me lots of time to explore other classes, and gives me time to complete other minors (which might turn into a second major)!

I actually didn't decide to be a Public Health major until halfway through first semester, yet I can't imagine ever studying anything else! When I applied to Hopkins, I stated that I would be majoring in Writing Seminars because I've always loved creative writing. Senior year, I did really well in AP Bio and spent the entire year working in a Neurobiology lab, so I though I'd probably double with Neuroscience as well. Throughout the fall, I loved my writing sems and neuro classes (Intro to Fiction and Poetry and Physiological Psychology) but I realized that I couldn't imagine myself being able to balance the writing sems requirements with the pre-med ones or spend four years on one focused subject like Neuroscience. I spoke with some of my older Public Health friends (JHU_Saznin was elemental in my making this decision), and realized that it aligned perfectly with my interests! I had a meeting with my advisor last week to officially declare my major and am now affiliated with the Public Health Studies Department!

I came in sure that I wanted to be a Neuro Major. Then, during the middle of this term, I started to vacillate a lot, and started considering a wide range of other majors. I wanted to find a major that combined my interest of science with a little bit of humanities. I finally decided to stick with Neuro, but I think it is important to be open to considering other majors and be constantly evaluating what you interests are and whether your major fulfills them. You may find yourself in a completely different position by the time you graduate from where you are now!

Coming in as a chemistry and biology double major, I was fairly certain that those are the subjects I wanted to study. My interests in those subjects had begun in high school and continued until I was almost done with my first freshman semester here. I actually changed my mind during the office hours of one of my professors, Dr. Jane Greco. As my organic chemistry laboratory professor, she shared many of the same interests in chemistry that I did and I enquired about her life. Hearing about her career, life choices and course of study really interested me and I payed particular attention to what her regrets from her programs of study were. She talked about the limitations of a biology major and how unmathematical it is. She suggested I look at biophysics and engineering because they seemed to suit my interests more, and she was completely right.

I found myself very interested in engineering and switched my biology major to Materials Science & Engineering with a focus in Biomaterials. Although I am still doubling with chemistry, talking to my professor was a defining moment in deciding my major and I am really happy with the decision I made.

When I applied, I stated that I wanted to major in English with either a double major/minor in Spanish. I had a lot of people tell me that I would eventually end up changing my major, but I've always been drawn to the humanities and analyzing literature interests me in a way that many other subjects don't. I also love the overlap between Spanish language and literature and English literature, and as of now I am still keeping the majors that I applied with.
However, I'm now also considering Sociology and possibly Latin American Studies, because of the Political Sociology of Latin America course I took this semester. English will always be my first love, but I'm glad that I still have several different options for minors/ a double major.
All the best,

I applied to Hopkins as a Mathematics major... Accepted as a Psychology major (after attending an amazing lecture by a Hopkins Psychology professor)... Told everyone the first week I was an International Studies major... Then considered a Political Science major... and now I'm pursuing an Economics major. The beauty of Hopkins academics is that you don't have to know exactly what you want to study. I've found that the best way to pick a major is to take  a wide range of classes and find a subject that genuinely interests you. I discovered economics and I'm really enjoying it thus far, but there is plenty of me to change my mind (yet again!) and pursue a completely different field of study!
