Could someone write a little about Intersession?  Is this similiar to what other schools call a Winter Term?  Is this optional or required?  What are some of the opportunities available to students and what kind of projects have you participated in during this time?

Intersession is really just like Winter Break.  The thing is its like a month long so you can come back to school early and take Intersession classes which are typically fun and you can get credit for it.  They offer courses in swing dancing and jump roping, along with other more traditional classes.  I didn't happen to come back for interesession but a lot of people I know did and apparently it was a lot of fun.  Also, I think there are some study abroad opportunities over intersession that look really interesting.  I know there is a dig to Luxor, Egypt and I think there is also a Renaissance Art History class in Florence.

Intersession is college without the stress. Completely optional it can be the best time of the year. Some students coem back to just hang out and not take any classes. The past two year I took: Reality Television as Public History and Sacred Spaces. I picked them because they were field trip and television based. They lived up to expectations.

Hey jessica,

Intersession is a really good time to come back to Baltimore and start exploring the city (if you're a freshman), take a class or two, and not have to worry about the burden of grades. I came back after first semester freshman year, took "Digital Storytelling" (a class created specifically for Student Success Series Students), and got to know a lot more about my friends. The classes are graded on a Satisfactory (S)/Unsatisfactory (U) scale, and so you may even want to take a class in an area that you'd never think of exploring.

In addition to what are termed "Academic Exploration" courses, there are also "Personal Enrichment" courses (like juggling or extreme jump rope....) and Study Abroad opportunities in places like the Galapagos Islands and Florence. (Check out Intersession for more details.

Intersession is AWESOME!!
It either means 3 extra weeks of break (!!!) an awesome chance to go study abroad somewhere like costa rica or Italy (!!!) or a fantastic way to explore something at Hopkins that you are interested in, with less stress and maybe something that's a totally different discipline than you are used too!! (Ballroom Dancing, Wine Tasting, a cool Journalism Internship etc..)
Regardless it's an awesome time to be at Hopkins with low stress and lots of fun!!

Last intersession I actually went oversees to Africa (visiting family and helping in health clinics). Pretty cool. Then this intersession I took the Extreme Jumproping Course. Very cool.  B)

I'm definitely coming back for Intersession! I'm hoping to take one of the following courses: "Piracy, Homicide, and Divorce: Foundations of Western Law in the Ancient Greek World" or "Musicianship Intensive." I wish I could take both of them, but there's a two-credit limit for Intersession, and both classes are two credits each. Oh, well. If they'll be as interesting as I think they'll be (at least interesting to me), I shouldn't mind whichever one I take. :)

Of all of my breaks thus far at Hopkins, I think Intersession has been put to use most. Let's see...My freshman year, I took a class through the DMC called Digital Storytelling, which basically entailed making a five minute movie (about my mom). Then, last year, I went back to Jamaica with my sister (can't wait to go back to see the fam.!)...This Intersession, I want to come back to campus and chill (no pun intended). I'll most likely be doing something down at the medical school (shadowing a doctor), volunteering, studying for MCATS, and going to New York City on that trip that I always seem to miss! (I'm going this year though!)...plus, my friends from Florida are supposed to come visit. Hopefully it snows...a lot!

As a freshman, I feel like I have plenty of Intersessions/summer breaks to work with in the future .. I'm going to be spending this Intersession at home in New Jersey!  I can't wait to be able to spend an entire month home with my family and friends.  :D  Still, I definitely see Intersession as an amazing opportunity open to Hopkins students and, after this year, I definitely plan on taking advantage of it!

*sigh*... My intersession is going to be spent back in Baltimore studying for (and taking) the MCAT. I'll probably also be teaching the Red Cross Emergency Response class for  HERTU (Hopkins Emergency Response Teaching Unit), running shifts with HERU (Hopkins Emergency Response Unit, our on-campus EMS unit) and helping out with the EMT-B class offered for active HERU members.

I'm coming back for intersession. I don't think I need an extra three weeks of New Jersey. My parents are both really busy and I have no idea what I would do haha...so I'm coming back! I don't really know what classes I want to take...any suggestions?

PS intersession=extra cash!

An intersession class that looks great is Globalization and the Big Apple.  I guess they take trips to NYC and go to various Public Relations Firms.  It sounds really great!

I'm probably coming back over intersession so I don't get bored at home and because being at home for Thanksgiving, I already miss my friends from Hopkins.

I'm really interested in taking a Screenwriting class too since I didn't get into the one I wanted to take Spring Semester.  It will give me a leg up when I finally take the real class

Yup, we were there one day too!  It isn't much time, and you always feel like you barely get rested up and then you have to be back at school doing work again .. but trust me, it's worth suffering through that for the breaks you get in college.    You don't have as many single days off during the year, but winter and summer break will be fantastic.  And, generally, without homework!

I'm saving up to go to Ghana next Intersession. The Africana Studies Center and the Office of Multi-Cultural Student Affairs sponsor a Trip there every Intersession. One catch, it's $3000...[sigh]

Hopefully, I'll be back during intersession to get my full EMT-B certification.  HERU offers an EMT class during intersession for members of the unit who have passed the Emergency First Responder course (which I'm currently taking). Normally, an EMT class takes about 3 months...we do it in 3 weeks, working up to 8 or 9 hours a day, but at the end you come out with your EMT certification and can go ride with Baltimore paramedics on ambulances and such instead of just responding to on-campus emergencies.

So, technically I will have graduated, but I think you are eligible for intersession if you were a student during the preceding fall semester.  I'm hoping to take ballroom dancing!
