Hiii,

I'm an incoming freshman. I'm thinking about taking courses this summer, but I'm a bit messed up about the application process..
It says on the website that incomings are pre-certified, but I don't have my JHED ID yet, so how do I apply as a pre-certified student? and how are pre-certified students' applications different from the other applicants'?
Also, an essay seems to be required.. Are there any requirements for the topic or word limit? Is admission based on the essay?

Thanks a lot..!

From the Summer University website,

YOU ARE PRE-CERTIFIED IF:
-- YOU ARE AN INCOMING 2011 JHU FRESHMAN
-- YOU PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED A PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAM
Begin your Hopkins undergraduate experience this summer. Choose from courses taught by the same Hopkins professors who teach here year round. Incoming freshmen will get a jump on college credits as they get to know advisors, faculty, and the Homewood campus. Please visit http://www.jhu.edu/summer/courses to see a listing of our courses.

If you'd like to register, please:

Call 410-516-4548 or email summer@jhu.edu to request your application fee waiver code.
Complete the online application form. Use the application fee waiver code in lieu of payment for the application fee.
Send us your most up-to-date transcript. Current high school students, submit your latest high school transcript. Mail, fax or email your latest transcript to:

I didn't apply to Summer University, but the application asks this:
Please include a 2500 character excerpt from a recent academic paper you have written. This may be part of an essay, a research paper, a creative writing piece, or any other original work which you believe reflects your personality and academic potential. I'm not sure if it's required for pre-certified students (I would ask that in the email/call).

Hey caramel (awesome username btw),
Aside from all the information Kate posted I would suggest that you don't contact the summer programs office until you have your JHED ID and/or Hopkins ID, as they'll be asking for it to confirm that you are an enrolled Hopkins student. Until you're given this information the only department that really has your information is admissions. (Early decisions students will receive this information at the end of March.)

Aside from that the only way that pre-certified students' applications are different, well they aren't that much. The reason that you still have to go through the process is because the pre-college students (and you are technically included as a pre-college student) all live in Buildings A & B, and as such there is limited space.

Finally, the essay is actually very simple as its more of a writing sample, I copy/pasted the introduction and conclusion paragraphs from a research paper I wrote comparing genetic research techniques over the past ten years. Since I was applying for Introduction to Biological Molecules and Calculus I that was appropriate, so I'd suggest you chose something that's related to the courses you'd like to take.

Thanks for the information! (and the compliment on the usename ;P )

also, I'm an international student and I'm not planning on leaving when the Summer courses are over. Do you know where international students can live between the end of SummerHop and move-in day for incoming freshman?

Thanks again. (sorry abt all the questions..)

I actually don't know of any place, but I can tell you that housing closes down the university dorms during this time to prepare for the coming academic year, so there's no way you could stay in the dorms. When you get closer to orientation/summer you could contact the Orientation Office and ask them what students have done in the past and how early you'd be able to move in (sometimes they make special exceptions for international students).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
