My physics 2 TA was concerned that we didn't really understand one of the chapters after the lecture that our professor gave, so just emailed us his own typed explanation with diagrams and examples and everything.  It was extremely helpful and really nice of him to do!  From my experience, the TAs tend to pay a lot of attention to the types of questions that students ask and they really try to get to know all of the students in their section, so I never hesitate to go to my TA's office hours if anything in lecture isn't clear.

Some TAs are a miss, others are a hit. Unfortunately my orgo TA was VERY unprepared and we ended up leaving in 15 minutes instead of an hour and twenty minutes. Good TAs have some kind of material prepared to go over and can answer questions well...so yea. But on the bright side, there are other TAs that know their stuff and you can go to their sections sometimes and email them and whatnot.

I totally agree with Domo.. some TA's are win are some are fail. My physics II TA last semester had a really bad accent that no one could understand and some people just ended up not attending the TA session at all. But this semester, I have TA's for Differential Equation and Calc III and they both are really awesome. They both speak English pretty well and are always prepared.

I've never had a TA that didn't come prepared.  The only complaint I have is that my one TA last semester changed his office hours like every single week so it was really hard to keep track of when I could get help from him.  It wasn't that big of a deal though because the math and physics TAs both have a certain time slot every week where they have to be in the math or physics help room, where anyone can come in to get tutoring.

A lot of TA's set up extra office hours around the time of an exam, and many also set up review sessions.  I know when I had physics 2 with Greco every tuesday or so before an exam the TA's would hold a 2-hour review session.  I only attended two of them, but they seemed fairly helpful.

The good news about bad TA's is that you can always switch sections and get a better one, so no big deal.  Unless, of course, the other sections are full or you miss the add/drop period, in which case you are stuck with the bad one.  However, you can still go to other sections to get the benefit of their lesson but without getting the attendance credit.

My orgo lab ta is amazing! He's super quiet but so nice...I ask him the dumbest questions but he always answers non-judgementally, and he never freaks out when my experiment goes awry (not that it happens often....  :D  )

So, i'm probably going to say exactly the same sort of things as everyone else, but i don't care!

Anyway, as everyone's said, TAs can be hit or miss. I know i've had my share of bad one's. However, one thing i found was that if i didn't like my TA or i couldn't understand him, other TAs for that class were more than willing to let me come speak to them and help me themselves.

I have also had some great TAs. I must put a plug in for all the philosophy grad students/TAs. I have yet to find a bad philosophy TA, and even when i see them outside of class they are always really friendly and happy to chat and help with any sort of philosophical dilemma!

Another good thing about TAs is that they often hold review sessions before exams.  This is really helpful because they devote a lot of time to both going over problems that they consider to be important and answering questions that students are confused about.

Now that I am a TA for a course, I'd like to put a personal plug in and say USE US! :) We are oftentimes the bridge between scared students and scary seeming professors.

I totally agree with everyone who said their TA's were either a hit or a miss.  I did have the lovely experience of switching sections for Calc, so I've experienced both good and not so good TA's. In certain classes, they will introduce some new material, but usually they only teach a small portion where as the vast majority of the material is given by the professor.

Yeah I agree. The TA's really do know what they are talking about. Sometimes, however, they may not be the best at expressing themselves (like with my Calc TA) but if you take the time out to ask them a question, they seem more than happy to help you. If there's one that that I have really been trying to do is not rely on professors or TAs to explain everything to you. It's important to ask as many questions as you can to clarify any fogginess you may have in the class.

If the TAs don't really seem to be helping you, trying to use the Help Rooms/ Learning Den or just go to your professor's office hours.

Overall, my TAs just go over material covered in the previous lecture to solidify the concepts in my mind.

TAs are also good for talking about life. haha that sounded creepy. I mean that now that I;m about to be a senior :'( , I talk to my TAs about life after undergrad with regard to grad school and working. I talking to my epidemiology TA today about her experience getting a masters degree from Hopkins and what she planned to do with it. It gave me some food for thought!

TAs are really helpful in my opinion. They offer a different perspective, and can often find more of a middle ground with you compared to professors.

I support the general consensus that TA's can be a "hit or miss". I've had TA's for my Calculus II Section, Physics Lab, General Physics Section, Chemistry Lab, and Intermediate Spanish this semester. Out of the five, I really found three of them (Spanish, Chemistry lab, and Calculus) to be extremely helpful!

My TA for calculus was the best- she was approachable, helpful, extremely accurate, and friendly! On the not so great side, my TA's for Physics and Physics lab were not so helpful. Both TA's were pretty unintelligible, as they had both recently moved to the United States. I have no doubt that they knew their physics, but I really felt that my TA and my class had a hard time communicating.  I ended up getting most of my physics help from tutoring sessions at the learning den. In these sessions, a maximum of six students can discuss problems or concepts with an upperclassman who did well in the course. These tutoring sessions are available for a multitude of classes, and there are usually at least three to four sessions per week that you are able to sign up for.

On a side note, I wouldn't recommend the 8am physics section on Fridays unless you are a morning person! In high school, 8am doesn't seem that bad, but in college, 8am might as well be 6am! (It's very hard to learn about angular momentum and whatnot if you're half asleep!)

The only times I've ever had a TA as a primary teacher were optional sections of larger classes. They were all excellent. I've never had a complaint about any of my TAs. The Nervous System I & II TAs are particularly good.
