Which level of the library is the best?
« on: December 06, 2008, 02:53 PM »
I recently published a new post on my blog about the library.  I bascially gave a tour of all the different levels of the library and why I liked or disliked them.   Read it Here!  I received quite a few comments and figured I would expand the discussion on the message board.  Which level of the library do you like best and why?  Do you like studying at the library at all?

My favorite level by farrrr is M-level.  I am currently sitting it what could possibly be the best location ever.  I am at a very large individual desk at the back corner by the windows.  Why is it so amazing? Well mostly because I really need to concentrate---which as evidenced as my post on the message board, I'm clearly not doing--but also because I still get to remain on M-level.  The tables, the lighting, and the people (funny combination of things) are all great on m.  The only thing I ever have a problem with is that sometimes the interent is finicky.  But overall, M-level is great for running into people, and remaining calm.  If I really stress out I will probably relocate to C-level, but for now I"m sitting at the nice desk that fellow SAABer, Julia, was kind enough to save for me and livin' it up.  Go M-level!

I agree, M level all the way.
I really like having a table on M. M is nice because you can have quiet conversations without being glared at by anyone.
If i get really stressed i sometimes move to B, but i much prefer M. Also, i like people watching to procrastinate, and you see far more people wandering around on M than on the other floors.

Having said this, i haven't really worked in the library much this year. I really like my suite, and it's nice to be able to sit in my room, or the kitchen and work.

I actually haven't been to the library to study at all this year.  I love studying in my room.  It seems like every time I'd be at the library, I'd stress myself out somehow.  Granted, I get distracted quite easily in my room, but it's a lot more calm (and I don't have to go out into the cold!).  I did love frequent trips to Cafe Q during my library days, though I'm probably saving a ton of money this way haha.  I was a familiar face on C level, mostly because I could never find a spot on M level which I liked for all the reasons Jackie and Tabitha already mentioned.

I've never really studied on M level. I'm one of those ppl who need quiet to study, and I get quite distracted on my own without the help of my friends :P I dunno, I just like being alone when I do my work. This is kind of a problem though because I need quiet, and half the time my dorm is too noisy for me to work well. This is why I come to the library all the time...I do tend to leave really late, like a.m. late, but what's the difference between staying up late in my room or in the library? Either way I need to get work done.

I like B level now. I used to go to D level b/c B level was always full, but I like this level now. Which is where I am typing this long paper. Ok, back to work :P

I'm an A-level person!  As a freshman, I hateddddddd the library, and the only time I ever went there was either for coffee at Cafe Q or to watch a movie for my French class.  The screening room is on A-level, so that floor was the only one I ever really felt comfortable on during freshman year.  Now, even though I've sort of embraced the library {moreso than last year, anyway -- I can at least get work done there now!} and have tested each level to see which one fits me best, I'm still faithful to A.  It's a great balance -- I don't feel like I have to whisper when I want to talk to someone else, and yet there is still enough work getting done around me to motivate me to finish my own.  I'm a big fan of studying around noise and activity, so this level suits me really well.

I had only been in the library once until about April of my freshman year.  I literally had never seen the inside of it because I did all my homework in my room.  I think I was really accustomed to my work habits from high school (which mostly involved doing homework on the floor in my bedroom at home) so I just never felt the need to go.  I studied in the library more often sophomore year but not too much because I had a single in Charles Commons and could just shut the door if I needed quiet and go out and chill with my roommates when I needed a break.

It really wasn't until second semester junior year after I got back from my semester in Washington, D.C. and moved into an off-campus apartment that I started coming to the library a lot. Moving into a real apartment made me completely lose the ability to live and work in the same place.  I can't get anything done in my apartment so I come here a lot now (just ask Jackie--we're sitting near each other again today).

I like M-level (which is the first floor that's got these huge windows that let in all the sunlight).  It's always sunny (well, when it's sunny out) and the chairs are really big and comfy.  And I always run into friends on M-level and we chat or go upstairs for coffee when we need a break.

ok back to work... :)

For most of my freshman year (I started studying at the library regularly in November of my freshman year) and the first half of my sophomore year, I was a fan of D-Level. I loved how quiet it was! However, I started studying at C-Level in the second half of my sophomore year because some of my friends studied there. I found it more convenient to share group study tables with them or study at cubicles near them, since we all ate dinner together or took study breaks together--and it was much easier to get up at the same time as they than to rely on text messages to coordinate dinner breaks and study breaks (especially since cell phone reception is poor at some parts of C-Level and most parts of D-Level)! Even though some of these friends have since graduated and others have very different schedules now, I still frequent C-Level because I ended up getting used to how much warmer and brighter it is than D-Level--and C-Level is still pretty quiet most of the time, although I'll admit I find myself thinking it's a teensy bit too loud compared to D-Level.

I'm an A level person.  I like M for when I do work because there is life on M level and it's above ground, but I choose A because of the AV Center down there.  It's great to find films and take them out from there.

I'm so M level it's not even healthy. My friends and I set up a rotational schedule where one of us will get there early in the morning and then we make sure there is someone there at all times so we can have a table to work at in the afternoon/evening.

Sick? I guess...but I like that there are people and sunlight on M level, I think I get my best work done when I have that big atruim window in front of me.

Sophomore year I spent a lot of time on A level, but this year I try my hardest to be on M. Truth be told, I've never ever studied on C or D level, and I think i was on B level once last year. People are mad territorial in the library.

My claim to fame is that I traded off manning the fort and controlling an M-level table with Roxi.   Oh and it's not a library experience unless I run into Julia on M-Level.

I just went to C level for the first time today. Why is the ceiling in the back so low and why are there so many desks next to each other??

Yeah I never go anywhere but M.  Today I sat next to my roommate on one side and another friend on the other side and then Jackie came and sat near me... I love M level because I get to run into so many friends where while we're studying.  And I can actually talk to people!  I hate levels that are too quiet.

You Hopkins students and your library preferences .... HA HA HA. I actually have a confession to make ... in my five years at Hopkins I have only been in the MSE library ... ONE TIME. I really do need to make my way up there and take a look. My only real introduction to the library was the hysterical video you all made last semester:

It really depends on what type of work I'm doing.
M level is definitely the nicest, and has really comfy couches/a lot of light/is the closest to Cafe Q, but I usually slack off there because there are so many people.
For some intense finals studying , i like the cubicles in B level--I don't really like to venture below B, because there aren't any windows after that point. It's nice to at least know if it's raining out, etc and just generally keep tabs on the real world.

Also-Daniel, I really can't believe you've only been to the library once! It's practically the biggest building on campus. Plus the coffee is great!

Ahhh Lauren B.  There are definitely windows!  I believe that d-level actually besides M-level has the best view of outside.  That being said, I don't really like studying on D.  Try going to C-level sometime.  It's wonderful!

A curious mystery I have never been able to figure out -- we agree that the library goes in levels of intensity.  M-level is really social, D-level is I'm-going-to-lock-myself-away-so-I-can-cram-for-this-final-without-any-interruptions.  So then why does B-level always make me feel like I have to be more intense than C-level?  Does anyone else experience this too??

Even though it's engineering, I do study on C-level.  It's wayyy less intense, but still quiet.  If I can't be in a noisy area aka m-level, then I go down there to focus.

Haha, I love the comments and posts on this thread.

So I've actually studied on all the levels, and here's my input.

If I'm with friends or working on some art (art requires me to venture to D-level to get art books though), I usually work on M Level.

A Level is my alternative if M level is full and I can't find a seat. I really don't like it that much.

B level is my favorite thus far. It's quiet, and I don't feel claustrophobic. haha

C level is nice too, I've only been there once (and I saw Laura there, haha). It does have all the engineering stuff though, so I'm sure I'll be there soon again.

D level is intense. I've ventured down a few times, but the only time I actually did work was when the library was full (sunday night), and it was the only place I could find a seat.

But yeah, B Level and M Level are my favorites, haha.

In my three and a half years here, I've only gone to the library to study.. wait for it.. once!. So I'd say the best level is the quad (Q) level since that's where I spend the most time waiting in line at Cafe Q for coffee in between classes

I may be the odd person out here, but I've actually never studied on, nor really felt inclined to study on, M Level. I actually love the library, not only for studying, for I just happen to like libraries, and places filled with books.

I only have ever studied on A level when I go to the library early in the morning, and by the time it gets crowded around 9 am, I move down to lower levels. I've always liked B levels' intense cubicles when the appropriate circumstances calls for them, and I agree with everyone's assessment about how B seems much more intense than C.

I've only recently discovered C level when I went to get a neuroscience book, and it's a nice atmosphere to study with people, as opposed to B or D. And I love D because of the windows (as Jackie mentioned - the view is gorgeous, especially in the recent snow!), and the fact that the literature and language books are down there.
