When will the Class of 2012 application be available? Is it possible to give the essay questions before hand, for those who want to work on the application over the summer?

Thanks

Thanks for your post.  The Class of 2012 application will be available in all formats at the end of August 2007.  Essay questions will be a part of the application and will not be released prior to the entire application.

Hopefully this will allow some free time this summer to enjoy the sun and great weather!

Best,

Mark

Application materials for the 2007-2008 admissions cycle will be available in August. Please check the following web site in early August for access to the Johns Hopkins Online application, a downloadable PDF of the Johns Hopkins paper application, and downloadable copies of the Johns Hopkins supplements to the Common Application and Universal Application: http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/application.html.

If you would like a copy of the Johns Hopkins application mailed to you when it becomes available, please complete the mailing request form at: http://apply.jhu.edu/contact/webinquiry.html.

Please note, Johns Hopkins accepts applications in several different formats. Freshman candidates can apply with the paper version of the Johns Hopkins Application or online using the JHU Online Application. Freshmen candidates can also apply with the Common Application (online at app.commonapp.org) or the Universal College Application (online at www.universalcollegeapp.com). Please note that if you choose to apply using the Common Application or the Universal College Application, you must also submit the Johns Hopkins Supplement. Transfer candidates must apply by using the Common Application and Johns Hopkins Supplement.

As Mark's initial response stated:

"The Class of 2012 application will be available in all formats at the end of August 2007."

There is no set date for the release of the application materials ... just keep checking the site throughout August.

I have been a bit confused about this, as I was filling out some CommonApp forms.  I am wondering which parts of the application go through the mail and which go straight to JHU online.  Please correct me if I have missed something:

Online
Regular CommonApp (although I am confused whether or not I am supposed to just type my name or print and sign my name for that Sign & Submit part)
Hopkins Supplement

Mail
General Letters of Recommendation, one from a guidance counselor and another from a teacher in separate officially sealed packages.

Is there a certain way you want the letters to be sent?  I can't seem to find information on the CommonApp page about how JHU wants me to send mail packages.  Is there anything that I need to sign and send through mail?  I am applying for ED, so am I missing anything on the list here that I should be submitting?

Thank you!

For students applying to Johns Hopkins using the Online Common Application here is what you need to submit:

1. Complete the full online Common Application and submit.
2. Complete the JHU Supplement to the Common Application and submit online. (Supplements Tab)
3. Under the Payments Tab, pay the $70 fee online
4. If applying Early Decision, you will need to download the ED agreement under the Supplements Tab and mail that in.

5. You need to request all your standardized exams are officially sent by the testing agencies.

6. Your school needs to send the School Report, Official High School Transcript, and counselor letter of recommendation.

7. You also are required to have one teacher send a letter of recommendation along with the Common Application Teacher Evaluation Form.

All application materials must be mailed to:

Application Coordinator
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Johns Hopkins University
Mason Hall
3400 N. Charles St.
Baltimore, MD 21218

Please make sure all application materials include the applicant's full name, birth date, and current school.

In the future, I'd recommend reading the Common Application Instructionsthoroughly. You also should not only complete the Common Application but review the Supplements, Payments, and School Forms sections.

You should also review the Johns Hopkins deadlines and requirements page:
http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/deadlines.html

If we apply with the Common App, what information should we include on each essay?

The Common App asks for name / school / birth date and the Hopkins supplement asks for Name / Social Security #.  Do you just want Name and SS# or do you want Name, SS#, School, and Birth Date?

Finally, if the essay is more than one page, should we put all this information on each page?

Thank you.

It is best to include the following on all documents:

Name (use a consistent full name)
Birth Date
School
Social Security # (if you include it on your application)

This information should be included on every page of materials mailed to the Admissions Office.

On this page:  http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/application.html  it lists the various forms.  If I apply using the Common Application, the only supplement I have to submit is the Hopkins supplement, correct?  I don't have to submit Part II of the Hopkins Application?

Sorry if this is an absolutely stupid question but on the checklist page it listed Part II of the Hopkins application and I just wanted to make completely sure that I wouldn't be missing any paperwork.

Thanks!

On the checklist page you reference, it details the deadlines and requirements for a student completing the Johns Hopkins application. Someone applying with the Common Application replaces the Part I and Part II of the Hopkins Application by applying with the Common Application and the Johns Hopkins Supplement.

As we state quite clearly on the web site you linked,

"Freshman candidates can also apply with the Common Application (online at app.commonapp.org) or the Universal College Application (online at www.universalcollegeapp.com). Please note that if you choose to apply using the Common Application or the Universal College Application, you must also submit the Johns Hopkins Supplement, both of which you can download below."

Is it ok to mail a separate sheet for the "Awards, Honors, etc." and  "Extracurricular Experiences" part of the online application?

Yes such supplemental information is welcome. Please note any additional information that you mail to Admissions should include the following information: your full name, birth date, and school name.

Should I leave "Awards, Honors, etc." and "Extracurricular Experiences" part of the online application blank if I am mailing it in?

You can leave the areas blank but you should put a message that this material will be forwarded through the mail.

In an earlier post you said that when using the common app, students should send in the common app teacher evaluation in addition to a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Can the same teacher fill out the form and write the letter? Does the letter count as an additional recommendation?

Also, if a student is applying under the ED contract, will admissions administrators favor an application that was sent in september over one that was sent in late october?

Hello!
I have a question about deadlines. Is the November 1st Deadline for Early Decision post- mark? Or  does everything have to arrive at Johns Hopkins BY November 1st?

Thanks!

rkim815 = Yes, the form and letter can be by the same person, it counts as one Rec. For ED & RD, the time the application arrives or goes complete has no bearing on the decision rendered by the admissions committee.

chenggong = Postmarked by Nov. 1, 2007. All deadlines are postmark deadlines.

This may sound like an inane question, but I've submitted my application already, but for several reasons that i may now be regretting, i chose not to apply ED. Will my RD application be sent to the RD pile to wait for January or will it be reviewed beforehand?

Since you applied under the Regular Decision plan your application will be reviewed during the Regular Decision review process. We begin reviewing RD applications after Early Decisions are released in the middle of December, and continue reading RD applications through the end of March. Your application will not be given any priority nor be reviewed differently since it was submitted early.

Hi, do the Admissions staff send a letter confirming that they have received a student's application? If so, how long does it take for them to send a confirmation?

Thanks,
Rose

Hi Rose!  :)  Here's what Admissions_Daniel has said about this on behalf of the Admissions department.

Quote
As you can imagine, it's a busy time in the Admissions Office as we process application materials. Because of the volume of records being handled, we regret that it is not yet possible to confirm whether application files are complete or to identity which individual items have been received. We do request your patience over the next several weeks.

You will be mailed an acknowledgment postcard after your application is received and processed. Rest assured that application files are checked carefully for completeness. We will contact students whose applications remain incomplete. Those students will be given an opportunity to provide us with any missing items before we complete the evaluation of their applications.

We are unable to confirm the receipt of application materials through email. Early Decision applicants may call the Admissions Office at (410) 516-8171 after November 15 to check if their application materials have been received.

Don't forget to look through the threads to see if your question has been answered before posting!  ;)

Yes, the midyear report is REQUIRED OF ALL REGULAR DECISIONS APPLICANTS. The deadline for submission is February 15th.

Since midyear reports detail the most recent academic work of an applicant, they are very important and play a major role in the review of one's application.
