For the 2009-10 freshman application cycle, Johns Hopkins University has made a couple of changes to the way students can apply.

FIRST, there is no longer a Johns Hopkins application option. Freshman candidates can apply with the Universal College Application (online at: http://www.universalcollegeapp.com) OR the Common Application (online at: http://app.commonapp.org). These applications are now available online for candidates seeking admission for the Fall 2010 term. Please note that you will be required to complete the Johns Hopkins Supplement, no matter which application method you select.

SECOND, we will continue the movement towards a paperless application process. Starting with last year's application cycle, we implemented sustainable/green application system. Once again, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions invites students to use a convenient online application to save paper, electricity, gas, and time. We have a paperless document management and imaging system that will eliminates paper files and allows admissions counselors to do all of their application reading online. So, do the green thing and apply online.

Could you let us know when the JH Supplement will be available. I can't find it on the Common App or Universal App sites, and it doesn't seem to be posted to the Hopkins application page either.

The Johns Hopkins Supplement for both the Universal App. and Common App. is not currently available. We plan to release our application supplements at the end of August. At that time, we will update our applications page to include downloadable copies of the JH Supplement: http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/application.html. You will also have access to our supplement to submit online (our preferred method) through both the Universal App. and Common App. sites.

1) I noticed in your previous posts on different topics that you said we should not mix paper applications with online applications. However, I don't know how I can submit my teacher recommendation forms and transcript online. So is it ok if I apply using commonapp.org and mail in the teacher recommendation forms and transcript?

Applicants to Johns Hopkins University applying online (which we strongly recommend) can have their school forms submitted in one of two manners. First, if your school chooses, they may submit their parts of the application (school report, transcripts, recommendations) online through the Common Application web site. Please review the Common Application Web site for instructions on how to submit school materials online.

However, we understand that not all high schools have the capabilities of submitting transcripts, school reports, and recommendations online. Therefore, applicants to Johns Hopkins University may submit their portion of the application online (application forms, essays, and application fee payment) while having their school materials mailed by their school. School guidance offices may submit their school reports, transcripts and evaluation forms through the postal mail by sending the materials to the Johns Hopkins University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Be sure your complete name and birth date is included in all mailed application materials, and that your school uses the proper Common Application forms.

2) When we registered for the SATs, Collegeboard gave us the chance to submit the scores to colleges (I submitted them to Hopkins). Would we have to submit those scores again when we actually apply to Hopkins?

Typically not ... but you should always check with the College Board to make sure your scores have been sent. If they confirm your scores have been sent, then our office has them and has processed them.

And will Hopkins automatically take the highest sections from the SATs that we sent?

Hello!  Question about the Common Application.  I noticed that under Activities, there is a lot of room available to type in information about the activity, but when I do a quick print of the application, it cuts off the answer after about 90 characters and spaces.  When the admissions folks look at the Common App online, do they see the entire answer, or only what I see when I do a quick print view?

That is a question you must direct to the Common Application Technical Support team. We do not have access to the behind-the-scenes processes of the Common Application and therefore can not answer such questions.

while we're on the topic for common app, I was wondering, is it possible to clarify anything on the application once it has been sent?

Once you have submitted your Common Application and / or Johns Hopkins Supplement you are not able to return to the online application forms to correct anything or provide updates. Any updates or corrections must be mailed in.
