Application Processing
« on: December 03, 2006, 04:27 PM »
Hi! How are you? Wow, this blog has such wonderful features! :D  Hmm, anyway, I have a brief question about the application:

I turned in my Early Decision app by the deadline and got a blue card in mail after a week...Several days ago, an admission officer contacted me via email and asked for me to fax in a toefl report (and I did so the next day :) ).

But I haven't heard from JHU since that. So if there were no further notifications, does that mean all the other parts of my app are complete and received by JHU...?

Sorry, I just wanted to make sure a bit.

Okay, thanks a lot!

thanks again

If your fax was confirmed that means we received it.  You can also contact the person who emailed you initially to check on it.  Take care.  :D

When are notifications of admissions for RD sent to the students? Is it done via mail or by electronic mail?

When will decisions be released?

Though the exact date has not been finalized, we currently are targeting a mail date during the last week of March (between the 26th - 30th). As soon as we know an official mail date I will update the Hopkins blog. (Do know though that last minute changes do occur and the official mail date is not official until the mail arrives at the Baltimore post office -- just check the blog arrives from last March.)

How will decisions be released?

We will release decisions the same way we did for Early Decision. First, all the decision letters (admits, wait lists, and denies) must leave the Admissions Office and arrive at the Baltimore main postal center. Then we will follow-up later that day with email decisions to those applicants who provided a current and working email address with their application. Decisions will not be released over the phone until a week after the mail date. There is no way to determine at what time the emails will be sent. As well, please be aware we do not have an online system for checking application status.

I hope this helps.

Hello! I just wandered if I can track my application online. Is there such opportunity or should I write personally to the admissions board?

Because of the volume of records being handled, we regret that it is not possible to confirm whether application files are complete or to identity which individual items have been received. Johns Hopkins does not have an online system for checking application status, nor do we confirm application materials through email.

You will be mailed an acknowledgment postcard after your application is received. This indicates your application file has been opened (not necessarily that it is complete). In late February, once we have processed all received application materials, we will contact students whose applications remain incomplete. Those students will be given an opportunity to provide us with any missing items before we complete the evaluation of their applications. Rest assured that application files are checked carefully for completeness.

Let's say that one gets accepted in April, as is the Regular Decision acceptance release time, how soon after would one receive a packet of information, financial aid information, etc? I'm mainly concerned because my school requires a decision by May 1st, as do many colleges. Thank you for your time.

When we release RD admissions decision notifications, we provide admitted students with all the information they will need to make their decision, including their financial aid offer. Due note that financial aid offers will only be included with admit packets for those who complete a financial aid application by the deadline. Johns Hopkins requires students to make their enrollment decision by May 1st as well, so we provide all information at the time of decision release.

I noticed that it says "by: 4.1.08." I read this and thought perhaps that Regular Decisions could come any time between December 15 and April 1. Am I incorrect in this?

No, Johns Hopkins University does not have a ROLLING DECISION policy. All of our Admissions decisions are released on the same day. For Early Decision this year it was December 14 ... despite all materials saying "by December 15."

For Regular Decision we say "by April 1" because that is the last possible date we will release decisions. Typically we release decisions with in 2-3 days around the April 1st date. Last spring we released decisions on March 28th. The year before we released on March 30th.

We will mail notifications for Regular Decision the last week of March up until April 1st. We will decided what day we are releasing in mid-March and notify applicants by posting the date to the main Admissions site and my blog.

Hello Admissions,

I was wondering why my admissions decision was not sent to the email address that I wrote on my application. It was actually sent to another address that was reported to be not in use anymore. Therefore a revised email address WAS reported. Is admissions not supposed to use the email address supplied in the application? Does filling out a paper application or online applcation make a difference in the process? Will one be preferably read over the other? Lastly, would being an Intel Finalist from the Intl. Science and Engineering Fair have a highly positive effect on the admissions of an applicant? How is that weighted in the decision?

Thanks alot,
Curious Fellow

We are actually looking into why a number of our emailed Early Decision notifications went to email addresses different then the ones listed on the student's application. It seems that a handful of emails went to older email addresses of an applicant that they may have used when they were a prospect or when they registered for standardized test exams. We believe when we imported either online applications or standardized test reports, the email addresses reverted back to old email addresses. We apologize for the confusion and will be fixing any problems that exist.

There is absolutely no difference between the review of paper applications versus online applications.

For your question about being an Intel finalist, I suggest you read the discussion thread regarding academic enrichment: http://www.hopkins-interactive.com/forums/ask-admissions/summer-programs-40/. Success in research competitions is considered as a high level of academic enrichment and will definitely matter in the application review. There is no way to quantify it though.

Thank you very much for you reply. Your response helped. Well, I am an Intel Finalist. I was hoping to conduct a continuation of my project that was presented at Intel as part of an independent research for Wilson undergraduate. That is why I was wondering about its effect on my application if it would strengthen it or not, but unfortunately I was denied to this year"s admissions to JHU. Does that mean my application does not stand a chance in the regular admissions pool? I understand that the applicant is evaluated on the overall basis, but is there a possibility of me being deferred and re-evaluated?

If you were not offered admission during Early Decision, nor did your letter detail your deferment to Regular Decision, then the application cycle is complete for you this year. For students not admitted and not deferred, we do not re-consider those applications. Additionally, there is not a process of appealing your decision nor is there a process to be moved from a deny decision to a defer decision.

The Admissions Committee decisions are final decisions. We spend an arduous amount of time debating and discussing all decisions, and therefore there are numerous reasons behind the decisions we render.

Do note that there are always the options to transfer to Hopkins in the future, or to consider us for graduate education.

With the day drawing near, the knowledge of our mail delivery's speed, and my impatience and laziness is there a way to learn if we got accepted or not ON April 1 or do we have to wait the few business days for the actual letter to get to us.

Regular decision admissions notifications will be released by April 1st. No official date has yet been selected for the release of decisions. Decisions will be released by postal mail as well as emailed to students who listed an active email address on their application for admission. Johns Hopkins University does not offer an online system for checking admissions decisions.

Hello!
I have a small question.

Currently I am using the Common Application online site to fill out my application.
It says in it that I need a School Report from a counselor.

Aside from my high school grades, what else is required for the School Report?

Thanks

The Secondary School Report is a document that must be completed by your high school guidance/college counselor. The form needs to be submitted by your school along with an official high school transcript, high school profile, and guidance counselor letter of recommendation. This is not a form submitted by the student.

If I think my counselor school report and counselor recommendation might be late for Early Decision at Johns Hopkins, is there anything I can do to get it extended?

Is it possible for my counselor to submit her items online a bit late?

Thanks again

If I drop it off in the blue mail box next to the post office on Nov 1, will it be postmarked for Nov 1? Or do I need to get it in before the post office closes?

Does the November 1st deadline for the online application mean that the online application must be submitted by midnight of October 31st or midnight of November 1st?  Just wondering because I would like to review my application before submitting it and wouldn't want to be rushed Friday night.

For Early Decision all application materials, including school materials, need to submitted online or postmarked on November 1st.

If your school materials are being sent late, that your school counselor must contact our office - 410-516-8171 - to explain the delay in the submission of the school materials.

If you are mailing your Early Decision application materials on Saturday, November 1 ... the only way to guarantee the November 1st postmark date is to have it stamped at the Post Office. If you drop it in an outside mail box there may not be a pick-up until Monday and then your mail will not be postmarked Nov. 1.

Don't procrastinate ... make sure you submit the materials to the post office before it closes on Saturday!!!

You have until midnight on November 1st to submit your online application materials. However, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to not procrastinate and wait until the last minute to submit. Why risk an error occurring???

Hi
I submitted my application to Johns Hopkins under Early Decision plan using Common App for application and supplement.
I checked back online today and for Common App, Supplement, and Payment it says "Submitted on 10/30/2008"
But the little symbols are not all green, which I think means that I am missing something.
It also says "None" on the Supplement even though it also says "Submitted"
Am I allowed to send in the necessary forms via mail if they did not go through online after the deadline?
Or is my application fine?
