Division III Athletics and Admissions
« on: May 19, 2008, 07:19 PM »
I am interested in running cross country and track at JHU. I wanted to know how being a prospective student-athlete can affect my chances of admission.  I am aware JHU competes in Division III athletics for everything but Lacrosse, so sports are most likely not of top concern.  Keeping that in mind, would my intent on running help me be admitted, or would I have to be admitted before any intentions can be made?

Being recruited for a DIII sport is A LOT different than being recruited for a DI sport. DI coaches have much more pull, and scholarships are involved as well.

Admissions works closely with all the coaches and a supported recruit will be factored in the Admissions review process. Being a recruit will matter, but how much of a factor depends on where you rank on a coach's list and also how strong of a candidate you are for admissions. For DIII sports, the academics always comes first both in the admissions process and during one's four years.

My suggestion is always to get in touch with a coach if you are possibly interested in playing a DIII sport at Hopkins. Just send them an email with questions about the team and also an introduction of yourself and your abilities. Coach contact info can be found here: http://hopkinssports.cstv.com/school...hop-staff.html

Are athletes evaluated separately for admissions? I heard that athletes are given a red folder to send their application in, which are reviewed separately from the other applicants.

No. Athletes are reviewed through the same process as all other applicants. Additional consideration is factored in when an applicant is recruited by a coach, but the review of the application does not vary from all other applications.

Applicants are not given a different type of application nor application folder. In past years, we have provided coaches with special red envelopes to have their recruits send in their applications so that those applications would be flagged correctly as recruits. But since most applicants now apply online, and we highly recommend applying online, the red envelopes aren't really used much anymore.

Greetings,
I am a rising senior with hopes of being admitted to JHU early decision. The question I have is regarding ice hockey. Is there a way to speak to the coach in hopes of being recruited? If I do talk to the coach, will the admission officers take this into consideration when reviewing my application? The reason I ask is because I can not find ice hockey in the athletics page of the JHU website.

Johns Hopkins University does not have an NCAA Division I or Division III Ice Hockey team. Our Ice Hockey team is a club-level sport, therefore there is no official recruitment process.

I applied to JHU through regular decision and in mid-February, a coach contacted me and offered to support my application if I were interested in attending.  I am an athlete who competes on a national level, but I did not initially apply through athletics. However, I did ask for his support. I was recently emailed about admissions and am wondering now - if I get accepted, how will I know if it is only for athletics or if I might have been accepted normally? Will I have to commit to the team if I get accepted?

Applicants are not accepted based solely on athletics or the support from a coach. Coaches can provide support to an applicant's file to the Admissions Committee as the coach hopes the applicant will play for their team, but all final admissions decisions are based on the complete evaluation of a student's application. Since this is Division III athletics, an admitted student is never committed to playing for a specific team.
