When applying ED, how recent does the high school transcript go up to? Do you receive the first quarter senior year grades or is just a list of senior year classes with no grades?

Also, when will the applications for next year go online?

Early Decision applicants are required to at time of their application send in a transcript that covers 9th - 11th grade and includes the student's senior year course listings. Early Decision applicants should have their 1st quarter grades submitted for review. If the Admissions Committee needs senior performance grades when reviewing an ED applicant's file, we will contact the student's school to have the information faxed or reported over the phone by the student's guidance counselor (that is if a 1st quarter grade report had not been received). With the majority of ED applicants, senior year performance, even if just the 1st quarter/marking period will matter.

The Application for Fall 2009 will not be available until late summer.

Thank you for the answer, Admissions_Daniel. Just one more quick question: do first quarter senior grades have a larger impact than junior year (as they are more recent)?

Absolutely. Most recent grades will always matter the most.

If I want to apply early decision for the fall 2009 term, when can I start the application process?

Application materials for the 2008-2009 admissions cycle will be available in August. Please check the following web site in early August for access to our application materials:
http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/application.html.

Do note that we will be making some changes to our application and the process of applying to Hopkins this year. Therefore we do not encourage students to begin working on their application to Hopkins until we make announcements about the 2008-09 application cycle later this summer.

I recently visited a medical school and I was told that they do not recommend that anyone apply early decision.  The point was to avoid falling behind in the regular admissions process in the case of a rejection.  I'm wondering if I will run into this same problem if I apply early decision for undergrad at hopkins.

Your post confused me a bit. Are you speaking of applying to graduate medical school or undergraduate colleges/universities? These forums are for questions about undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins --- not applying for medical school which you do after 4 years of undergraduate studies.

As far as applying early decision, it is only recommended in the case that you have a clear first choice school you would like to attend. If Johns Hopkins is your clear first choice then apply for early decision. You will have the same chance for admission as you would if you applied regular decision.

Do note two other things:

(1) Every college/university has a different policy on early decision / early action. There is no universality among all schools with regard to early admission programs.

(2) Even if you apply Early Decision somewhere you will still need to keep up with your regular decision applications to other schools.

I'm sure I want to go to JHU, but I'm sort of worried about the financial aid package I could receive (I'm hoping for grants/scholarships, not loans).

If I'm worried about such things, should I apply RD?

This is a hypothetical Question. Let us say that there is a borderline student whose admissions could go both ways... in or out. If they are able to convey that JHU is their overwhelmingly first choice and show some sort of higher level understanding of the school, would this make the adcoms lean a bit more towards giving him/her a position at JHU. I know every situation is different but does showing a lot of interest and passion about one school come into factor, even if it is not the deciding factor. This is on top of ED by the way... because applying ED already means JHU is first choice. I know some particular college crazed people out there

It is important to note that as an ED applicant you will be eligible to apply for all types of need-based aid offered at Hopkins. By applying ED you will not be at a disadvantage for financial assistance.

All applicants accepted ED who applied for financial aid will receive an estimated aid offer with their acceptance. A final aid offer will follow in the spring after you submit the additional required documents (FAFSA, current taxes, etc.). There is a chance that the final offer will differ from the estimated award dependent on how correct one's estimates were when they completed their financial aid paperwork during the ED process. If we are unable to offer you adequate need-based financial aid, you may be released from the Early Decision contract. Because no additional need-based aid would be available to you as a Regular Decision (RD) candidate, your application would also be removed from consideration altogether. The Early Decision binding contract holds in all other cases.

As far as merit-based awards, all such awards are released when Regular Decision notifications are released. ED admits will be eligible for such awards but will not learn of being offered a merit-based scholarship until the end of March. Therefore a student will have had to commit to Hopkins before learning of such merit-based awards.

Finally, do note we do not encourage a student to apply Early Decision if financial aid is a serious concern or if one is relying on receiving a merit-based scholarship to enroll. In such cases, we recommend waiting for Regular Decision so that you can weigh offers from a number of schools.

First, there is no such thing as a "hypothetical question" in college admissions.

Second, nearly every applicant is a "borderline" applicant where the decision can go any way. There are very few "slam dunk" candidates with an applicant pool as competitive as ours.

Now as far as your question, the only answer I can provide is that a student's level of interest in Hopkins is a minor factor in the admissions review process. Hopkins is not like some other schools that factor in an interest rating in our review of applicants. A student who has shown interest is equal to a crazed student who has shown a ton of interest ... and in the end a question of interest is never considered over questions of ability, fit, competitiveness, and contribution. Our decisions are based on the merits of the applicant, not on how much they want to attend Hopkins.

What's the average financial aid package that you provide to students?

(no loan numbers, please :))

Taken from our Fast Facts web site:
http://apply.jhu.edu/facts/facts.html

Quote
Financial Aid
Approximately 47 percent of undergraduates receive financial aid. The average need-based financial aid package for freshmen totals $31,612.

Total grants and scholarships awarded to students in 2007-2008: $47,712,423

Total student aid received in 2007-2008: $62,608,680

It is very important to note that the financial aid packaging system at Hopkins is very individual. Noting an average financial aid package will reveal little about what one individual might receive in terms of financial assistance. This is why we STRONGLY encourage students to use our Financial Need Calculator:

http://www.jhu.edu/finaid/estimator.html

The Johns Hopkins Early Decision contract states that students applying ED are stating that Johns Hopkins is their first choice school and if admitted they are committed to enroll. The contract also states that one can not apply to any other school with a binding early program.

Based on our ED contract, you may submit applications to schools with non-binding Early Action programs. You may not submit applications though to any school with a binding Early Decision program, a binding Early Action program, or a Single-Choice Early Action program.

Do know though that if admitted to Johns Hopkins under the ED program, you must withdraw all of your applications at all other schools and are not able to consider offers of admission from any Early Action schools you may have applied to.

I'm taking my subject tests in November. Is there a possibility that they will get there in time to be reviewed with the application?

The application says I can use any type of media to convey my answer to the questions. I've heard that some people have baked cakes before. Is that true?

Please review our Note on Standardized Test Dates here:
http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/testreqs.html

Since the SAT / SAT subject exams for November are being administered on the first day of the month, there should be ample time for November scores to arrive in time for Early Decision review.

Yes applicants in the past have submitted baked goods as their essay. In almost every situation, the food was submitted with additional materials representing the student's essay. Just baking us food will not lead to admission.

Hello, I have a question regarding what needs to be done for early decision applications.I am applying online, so after getting teacher recommendations do I send them in the mail along with my transcript? I'm confused.

We delineate the entire process for applying Early Decision right here:
http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/deadlines.html#ed

If applying online, make sure to review the application instructions page very carefully. We have designed these instruction pages to help you complete every step correctly.

Students applying online can have their letters of recommendation submitted in one of two manners. First, if your recommendation providers choose they may submit their letters of recommendation online through the Common Application web site. Please review the Common Application Web site for instructions on how to submit recommendations online. As well, recommendation providers may submit their letters and evaluation forms through the postal mail by sending the materials to the Johns Hopkins University's Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Be sure your complete name and birth date is included in all mailed application materials.

I feel that my senior year grades will really pull up my application (As in the hardest classes in my school). However, midyear reports aren't sent in till after ED decisions are made, if I'm not wrong.

Is there a way to get my first quarter grades included in time for early decision?

Mid-year reports are not considered during the ED review process. If your first quarter grades are available prior to December 1st, then you can request that your high school guidance counselor send an official copy to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. A fax from your high school counselor would expedite the processing. Do know though that we can not guarantee anything sent after December 1st will be added to one's file in time for ED review.

Thanks, would the first quarter grades be recalculated in my GPA for admissions purposes? (my school does not calculate it in my cumulative until the semester ends).

No, senior grades are never used in the re-calculated GPA since they are not final grades. However, this is not an issue because the re-calculated GPA is only used for statistical purposes and is not something that is crucial during the application review. See this discussion thread for more on the re-calculated GPA:

Hi!

I recently turned in my ED Application online, but realized I forgot to add something in the Additional Information section.  I know that section is optional to fill out, but I think it would help explain some of the choices I've made.  Is it possible for me to send in the information?  I assume I'd have to mail in a paper form, but I submitted my application online and I know it's preferred to not mix the two application methods.  Will this hurt my chances in any way (sending in additional information after the deadline and mixing online and paper forms)?

Thank you.
