If you review our Admissions website you would have read our detailed standardized exam policy, which answers these questions: http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/testreqs.html.

1. re: SAT II exam requirements
Johns Hopkins does not require applicants to take SAT II subject exams. We do recommend that all applicants take SAT II subject exams of their choosing, but we do not provide specific requirements on which exams one should take. It is recommended that applicants interested in an engineering major should submit scores from the Mathematics Level 2 SAT subject test and at least one science SAT subject test. This overall subject exam policy holds for applicants submitting SAT Reasoning scores as well as ACT scores.

There is no official advantage or disadvantage to submitting SAT II scores. It is the choice of each individual student whether they want to submit SAT II subject exam scores, how many exams they want to submit, and which exams. However, we want applicants to consider our recommendations as strong recommendations, therefore submitting SAT II scores will make a difference in the application review. There is no way to predict whether submitting scores will impact the review of the application positively or negatively, as they are part of the comprehensive review of an applicant's file.

2. re: test submission dates
Johns Hopkins requires that Regular Decision (RD) candidates complete their required tests no later than December of their senior year. This means that applicants must take either the SAT or ACT with Writing prior to the January 1 RD deadline. (When TOEFL is required that exam must also be taken before January 1.) Test scores need to be requested from the testing agencies prior to our stated application deadlines but may arrive after the deadline. Though December scores will arrive past the deadline they will still be considered if requested in advance of the deadline. There is no need to rush score reports as they do not arrive any earlier. We cannot guarantee that January scores will arrive before the Admissions Committee evaluation.

Past experience does suggest that exams taken in January usually arrive in time. Therefore, Regular Decision applicants may submit January testing if they are taking the SAT, ACT, or TOEFL a multiple time, or if they are taking the recommended but not required SAT subject exams. If the scores arrive before the evaluation then they will be considered with one's application. We cannot guarantee that scores sent after our application deadline will be processed in time to be reviewed with one’s application and we do not delay the review of an application to wait for scores sent after the application deadline.

Hello,

I'm a prospective student from Malaysia (just finished Form 5/Year 11). I have questions regarding the STPM exams, which I will take after another 2 years of studying in Form 6:

  • Are credits awarded for STPM in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, and Maths?
  • Since it would not be possible to submit the official STPM results (which only comes out in March) before the application deadline, am I put at any disadvantage compared to say, another student who has already gotten his/her official exam results?
  • My high school is known for giving considerably harder school exams than the actual STPM exams, which almost always results in lower marks/GPA when compared to other equivalent schools in Malaysia. Will this cause an disadvantage when reviewing my application?
Thanks in advance.

For STPM, we would award credit on a case-by-case basis. This is something you would discuss with the Office of Academic Advising, once you arrive for Orientation.

You are not at a disadvantage by applying before your exam results are available.  If your school can provide predicted results, that is helpful but not required.

We evaluate school grades in the context of the school.  You should not worry about grading differences between your school and other schools in Malaysia.

Is IELTS acceptable now?

As stated on our Admissions website (http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/faq_international.html):
"The TOEFL requirement is based on the linguistic background of applicants, not citizenship. TOEFL is required of all applicants who have not attended an English language school for the last five years and whose primary language is not English. Applicants who score 670 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT do not have to submit TOEFL scores, but are welcome to do so. Non-native English speakers attending English language schools for the last five years are not required to submit a TOEFL score but may do so to supplement their application. IELTS will be accepted from applicants who live in countries where TOEFL is not administered. A score of 7.0 or higher on each band is expected on IELTS."

The TOEFL is required of all applicants who do not speak English at home AND have not attended an English-language school for five years or longer. All other international applicants are not required to submit TOEFL scores but may do so to supplement their applications. The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants who score 670 or higher on the Critical Reasoning section of the SAT Reasoning exam. We do not have a comparable score on the ACT exam that leads to a TOEFL waiver.

Hi

I am an international student who has applied for undergraduate program for 2012 Fall Regular Decision.

I have just received a notification that I need to complete International Student Certification of Finance and International Student Bank Verification to complete my application.

My questions are:

a. Since I am unable to get onto the web to download forms, can you please let me know whether the above two are same or different forms.

b. My parents will NOT be able to fund full tuition at JHU. Most likely they can afford to provide me with USD 20K per annum towards fees+boarding, and that is probably max. With that financial restriction, and as an international student, is there any point in me continuing to hope that my dream of studying at JHU will be fulfilled?

Barring financial constraints, I should be eligible for entry into JHU from all other aspects i.e. I have an excellent academic and co-curricular records and based on my past records I should be able to score more than 40 in my IB exams in May.

Really appreciate a candid response as I would not want to be disappointed after all the efforts spent in the application.

Thanks

All international applicants must complete the International Student Certification of Finances form. You can access the form here: http://apply.jhu.edu/pdf/2012/application_international_finances.pdf. To submit the form, one must download it, print it out, complete the form, and mail it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. We do not accept this form sent via fax or e-mail. This form is a required element of one's application for admissions and therefore must be submitted by the application deadline. Without this form, ones application will be considered incomplete and we will be unable to review it for admission. If you have yet to submit this form, you need to submit it immediately.

As for financial assistance for international students, Johns Hopkins does offer limited need- and merit-based financial assistance. It is important to note that both types of assistance are extremely limited and offered to less than 10% of admitted international applicants each year. Applicants must apply for financial aid by the stated deadlines as noted on the following web site: http://www.jhu.edu/finaid/international.html

The admissions process for international students is need-aware, meaning the offer of admission is directly linked to the student's ability to meet expenses. An international applicant with financial need who is offered admission will also be offered financial aid. We will meet the full demonstrated need of the applicant in the form of a grant. Even if applying for financial aid, an international student must complete the International Student Certification of Finances form and submit this form along with the admissions application.

We do not comment on the chances for one's admissions or whether one is a strong candidate for receiving financial assistance.

Your school still needs to submit a mid-year report and your counselor needs to include some assessment of your work in your senior year. Predicted grades would suffice.

Your counselor must complete the mid-year report, so yes they can send predicted grades again.

Hello,

I'm an applicant from India, applied for a PhD program in JHU, School of medicine. Due some problem during my exam, My TOEFL score is less then the minimum requirement which is above 100 in TOEFL iBT (I guess).  Will my application still be considered. Will JHU allow me to give my TOEFL exam again and consider my application? Is GRE and TOEFL high score are very essential for selection at SOM, JHU.

Kindly reply as soon as possible, as i'm really tensed. JHU is my dream university and i really don't wanna miss this opportunity.

These Hopkins Forums are operated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for the Krieger School of Arts and Science and Whiting School of Engineering. Our office is not able to assist with questions regarding admissions to medical school as the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is a completely separate institution. You will need to contact the School of Medicine directly at: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/admissions/.

Hi!

I am an International student from Asia.

Despite being an International student, I have studied in America since Kindergarten. English is my first language.

I believe I can be waived for the TOEFL because I have studied for more than 5 years but would I have to request a TOEFL waiver by emailing someone or hand in additional documents?

Thanks!

If you have attended an English-language school for five years or longer than the TOEFL requirement does not apply and there is nothing you need to submit nor do you need to request a TOEFL waiver. Just by submitting your transcripts with your application the Admissions committee can determine that a TOEFL is not required.
