You need to submit it as soon as possible, as it is a required part of your application.

Hello,

I just have a quick question about International Financial aid.
My parents are able to pay certain amount of money, but just not all. If I apply for aid, will this affect my chance of gettign in? In other words, will admission officers reject because I may not be as competitive as other international students who applied for aid?

Will the admission officers "ask" me if I would be willing to go without any financial aid? or will they just reject me because it is so limited?

Thanks!!

Johns Hopkins does offer limited need- and merit-based financial assistance for a select group of international applicants. It is important to note that both types of assistance are extremely limited and offered to less than 10% of admitted international applicants each year. Applicants must apply for financial aid by the stated deadlines as noted on the following web site:
http://www.jhu.edu/finaid/international.html

The admissions process for international students is need-aware, meaning the offer of admission is directly linked to a student's ability to meet expenses or financial aid being awarded. An international applicant with financial need who is offered admission will also be offered financial aid. We will meet the full demonstrated need of the applicant in the form of a grant.

However, once we have chosen the select group of international students with financial need that we will be admitting and funding, we are unable to admit any other international students with need. So yes one's chances as an international student applying for financial aid is impacted by the limited number of students we are able to fund. We are not able to admit an international student who has need if we are not funding that student.

Are the applications from internationals who need aid separated from others?
Also, are there any things the admission officers look for specifically such as good SATs or do they look at overall things like they would to other candidates?

thanks!

Hi, if I am an international applicant applying ED, I am i eligible for financial aid???
Would I know my financial aid status by the time ED responses are mailed??????

Also, would the amount of aid effect my chances, or all those applying for aid viewed the same.

Ex. 10k aid vs. 30k aid

Thanks

No. They are reviewed just like every other application. However, in the final stage, if funding will not be provided to the international applicant than we are unable to admit.

All of our admissions review processes are holistic, which means everything in one's application carries equal wait in the decision-making process.

International students who are applying for financial aid are not eligible to apply Early Decision.

The amount of financial need does not impact the decision-making process, just that an international student has financial need.

As our Admissions Web site states:

FAQ page for International Students
http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/international.html

Quote
We are unable to admit an international financial aid candidate for whom we are unable to provide aid. If you are dependent on receiving assistance to attend Johns Hopkins, you should not apply under the Early Decision Plan, as merit awards are not made until April 1.

No. Missing the application deadline for one form is not ground for automatically denying a student. We understand that not all application materials are submitted exactly by January 1st, and we are quite flexible.

Can a student be admitted but denied for financial aid or admitted but placed on the waiting list for aid?

I am assuming you are asking about an international student who has applied for financial aid. If that is true, then as I have stated before, an international student can not be admitted if we are not providing them with funding. The process is need aware. So if an international student who has applied for aid and has been selected to be admitted, but funding will not be provided -- we are unable to admit that student. We do not have a wait list either for such situations.

You need to compose a letter of update and either fax it (410-516-6025) or mail it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. An e-mail nor phone call will not work.

Also, you will need to re-submit your International Student Certificate of Finances form with this updated information.
Is there any way to confirm whether the university has received my materials? I know that not applying for financial aid greatly affects my chances of admissions...

If the Admissions Office had not received any required parts of your application, including the International Student Certficate of Finances form, you would have been contacted. If your were not contacted then you can safely assume that all your application materials were received. Due to the high volume of work being done in the Admissions Office at this time, our team is not able to confirm for each applicant that every part of their application has been received -- especially since those with incomplete applications have already been contacted.

Hey!!
I'm from the caribbean and I would like to apply in year or two to either do a chemistry degree or chemical engineering. Here in the caribbean we have CSESC examinations and you have the choice to continue studies and do CAPE examinations. I would like to know if these examination results would be counted as part of my transcript. I am not apart of a sports club,I would like to know if this would affect my chances of being admitted ,I do charity service though. Im the treasurer of my Rotaract club  and im apart of a culture club. Would this be considered in the decision making of being admitted??
thanks in advance

Yes international applicants should submit any regional exams (such as CSESC / CAPE exams) along with their official high school transcripts, and all that informatuion will be reviewed by the Admissions committee.

Extracurricular activities are a major part of our application review process. There are not specific activities a student must pursure, but in the application review the admissions committee pays particular attention to a student's level of involvement, their extracurricular activities, their leadership experiences, and their commitment to service.

Hi, I am an international student, from Burma, but currently residing in Singapore. I am a junior, and graduating in 2012. I am in the IB diploma program, and am wondering if it is necessary for me to take the SATs, or if it is possible to just send in my IB scores. I know a couple of my seniors who took SATs when they applied for universities in the states. Will it be better for me to take the SATs? Is it recommended?

All international applicants are required to meet our Standardized Test requirements: http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/testreqs.html. The SAT Reasoning or ACT is required of all applicants and is not waived under any circumstances. SAT subject exams are not required but recommended.

The TOEFL is required of all applicants who do not speak English at home AND have not attended an English-language school for five years or longer. All other international applicants are not required to submit TOEFL scores but may do so to supplement their applications. The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants who score 670 or higher on the Critical Reasoning section of the SAT Reasoning exam.

All international applicants must complete the International Student Certification of Finances form. You can access the form here: http://apply.jhu.edu/pdf/2010/application_international_finances.pdf.

To submit the form, one must download it, print it out, complete the form, and mail it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. This form is a required element of one's application for admissions and therefore must be submitted by the application deadline. That means the form must be postmarked by the January 1, 2011 deadline for regular decision applicants.

Without this form, ones application will be considered incomplete and we will be unable to review it for admission. We do not process certificate of finances forms submitted via e-mail nor fax as an official copy of the form must be received by our office through postal mail.

You have read incorrectly. As stated on our standardized test requirements web site (http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/testreqs.html), Johns Hopkins does not require applicants to take SAT II subject exams. We do recommend that all applicants take SAT II subject exams of their choosing, but we do not provide specific requirements on which exams one should take. It is recommended that applicants interested in an engineering major should submit scores from the Mathematics Level 2 SAT subject test and at least one science SAT subject test. This overall subject exam policy holds for applicants submitting SAT Reasoning scores as well as ACT scores.

Additional information about our subject exam policies can be found on this discussion thread:

I'm an international student currently doing the A levels program in Malaysia. i intend to do my undergraduate in jhu. My questions are as follows :

1. does jhu except the A-level exam instead of the IB ?
2. what SAT subject test should i take if i'm planning to major in sciences ?
3. is it necessary to take a wider range of subjects even though, i am sure that i want to pursue a career in science ( eg. medicine, forensics, criminology ) ?

your interest in international students is deeply appreciated :)
