How much do interviews favor you @ JHU? Is there any chance to do a phone interview or traveling to campus for one?

Interviews play little to no role in the Admissions process. Our interviews are informational in nature and since we are unable to interview all applicants, they do not play an important role in our admissions reviews.

We do not do phone interviews and unfortunately all on-campus interviews must be completed prior to the application deadline.

A more detailed description about interviews can be found here:

I got an email a few weeks ago with the name of my alumni interviewer, but no contact information for him.  I've never heard from him.

Should I be concerned?  Or is this just part of the process?

Any questions about the alumni interview program should be directed to NASC@jhu.edu. I am not aware of the process for such scheduling so you will need to contact those who coordinate the program.

so why do an interview if it plays no role in the admissions process?

Interviews are for informational purposes. Students select to do interviews so that they can have a one-on-one discussion with a current student (on-campus) or an alumnus of Johns Hopkins (off-campus). They are a way to get individual questions answered and learn more about Hopkins directly from the source.

The Hopkins Course Catalog says under the admissions section that "interviews are not required for admission to Hopkins, but they can be helpful in determining whether Hopkins is the right school for the students." No admissions representative was available in my direct area, which was unfortunate, but nonetheless I'm very happy to be accepted at Hopkins.

However could I still arrange for an interview over the phone to find out whether Hopkins would be the school for me. My father graduated from Hopkins so if alumni that graduated in the seventies are conducting the interviews I could have a similar discussion with my father. However if more recent graduates are conducting the interviews could I still informally arrange to speak with someone over the phone?

Admissions interviews are conducted prior to the end of the application review. Both on and off campus interviews are opportunities for applicants to learn more about Hopkins and have a discussion with a representative of the University that will become part of their application. All interviews must occur before admissions decisions are rendered.

Our interview opportunities are not for admitted students to decide whether Hopkins is the school that they should choose. Those decisions are ones that each admitted student must make on their own. We encourage you to plan a visit to campus for one of the admitted student programs to learn more about the school. You should also review the admitted student web site and continue to use these message boards to learn more about Hopkins.

Do note that we will not compare Hopkins to other schools simply as a matter of principle.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately visiting is not an option due to the costs of coming from Amsterdam, but I will make the best use of other resources such as this forum and Hopkins Interactive. I apologize for breaching the forum rules by trying to ask for a comparison of Hopkins with other schools. I did not realize the mistake at the time and will be more circumspect in the future. No hard feelings.

Hey everyone!

I submitted an interview request several weeks ago and was just assigned an interviewer on the 8th. The interviewer has not yet contacted me, but I am worried because I may have entered the wrong phone number in the interview request - this was a problem at one of my other college choices as well. Should I just continue waiting or should I contact someone about it?

You should send an email to NASC@jhu.edu to check on the phone number you supplied. I would say that it has only been 5 days so you should have a bit more patience. Our alumni interviewers are very busy professionals and they sometimes take a bit of time to contact their assigned interviewees.
