Letters of Recommendations
« on: June 16, 2007, 07:07 AM »
I know that you need to have a rec. from our guidance counselor as well as one academic teacher.  Is submitting one or two recommendations in addition to these first two acceptable?

If not, would you prefer a recommendation from a teacher that taught the subject we plan on majoring in?

Thanks again.

As far as letters of recommendations for freshman applicants:

* Everyone is required to have one letter of recommendation from their guidance or college counselor. This should accompany the secondary school report and high school transcript.

* All applicants are also required to have a second letter of recommendation from an academic teacher. We recommend that this be a teacher in a core academic subject (English, Math, Science, Foreign Language, and/or Social Science) and that it be from a Junior (11th) or Senior (12th) year teacher. There is no requirement that the recommendation provider be from the same academic area that the applicant selected as their area of interest -- the choice is up to each individual application to make.

* Additional letters of recommendation will be accepted but we request that applicants NOT SUBMIT MORE THAN FOUR TOTAL LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION.

* The additional one or two letters of recommendation can come from another teacher, extracurricular advisor, coach, boss, etc. We have no preference here, but do not suggest parental or peer letters of recommendation.

Hi, my name is Melissa, and know I may be overthinking this way to much, but the last thing I want to do is create more chaos for the admissions staff. In addition to my counselor and teacher recs, I wanted to submit an additional one from my boss. Do I copy the Teacher Evaluation sheet from the packet and have him fill that out? Just wondering! Thanks so much!!

For supplemental letters of recommendation, no evaluation form is necessary. Just have the recommendation provider write a letter and make sure that your full name, your birth date, and your school is included in the letter (so we can match it to your application).

To make supplemental letters easy to process, you should ask the recommendation provider to put their letter in a sealed envelope and they should sign their name over the seal - that makes it official. Then you should send these letters along with your other application materials. This is not necessary as you can have the recommendation provider send their letter separately ... it just makes processing easier on our end.

The professor I did research with over the summer wanted to write a letter for me and I don't see a way I can submit one through the common application. If these types of letters are considered please let me know how to submit it. Would I just send it in along with the supplement?

Thanks a lot  :D

Additional letters of recommendation will be accepted but we request that applicants do not submit more than a total of four letters of recommendations. Additional letters of recommendation can come from anyone, including another teacher, extracurricular advisor, coach, boss, mentor, etc.

Additional letters of recommendation need to be mailed in to the Office of Admissions:

Application Coordinator
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Johns Hopkins University
Mason Hall
3400 N. Charles St.
Baltimore, MD 21218

Please make sure all application materials include the applicant's full name, birth date, and current school.

Okay,
Just to make sure. I gave my recommendations to my teachers already(The common app teacher evaluation forms.) Do they fill out the evaluation form(common app) and then write a separate letter, or is the evaluation form enough. I would like to know quickly so that I can tell them before they send them off.

Thanks

Does a letter of recommendation carry more weight if it comes from a Hopkins alum?  I recently found out that my current AP bio teacher went to Hopkins, so I just wanted to know if it would be beneficial for me to ask him for a letter.

I all ready have four; I have the required guidance counselor letter, one from my French teacher, one from my English II/English III teacher (same teacher), and one from someone at the local historical society (I've volunteered there for the past three summers).

I want to be an international studies major, so will having this extra letter from a biology teacher do any good?

I have a question about the letters of recommendation,
I am applying to JHU through ED and have found someone who is willing to write me a recommendation that is not a teacher evaulation. Is there a deadline in which that person must send it to the office of undergrad admissions by?

Thanks,
Michael Yuan

Magical Brownie:
They need to complete the evaluation form AND submit a separate letter.

Julia:
There is no way to judge the weight a letter of recommendation will carry until it is reviewed in the context of one's application. A letter of rec. is great from a Hopkins alum, but it isn't provided an added advantage for that reason.

Do note that we STRONGLY request students not submit more than 4 letters of recommendation.

yuanm718:
All letters of recommendation must be postmarked by the application deadline - November 1st for ED applicants.

Hi I'm applying to JHU under ED and was wondering if it is absolutely necessary to have my full name, school, and birthdate on an additional recommendation. I already have my teacher recommendation and one from my guidence counselor, but was unaware of these requirements when I asked my pastor. Unforunately, he only included my name. Will the recommendation be invalid because my birthdate and school is not included?

No, we use the information to make sure that it belongs to you and see that it is added to the correct folder and not another person by the same name.  Usually we can get it right without it.

The letter will not be invalid, but there is a chance it will not be merged with the rest of your application. If you have a common name, or your pastor did not use your full formal name, then you may want to have a second letter submitted with all the pertinent details.

Hi,
I just read what you said about recommendations not being considered if not mailed properly. Is there any way to fix the issue without sending another recommendation if your name, birthdate, and etc. is not on the original? This is unrelated to recommendations, but I was also wondering if first term grades are not good, can you send a transcript of grades by the end of maybe november to show improvement? will these new grades be taken into account by admissions, or is it too late for consideration under ED? Also: there is a pretty big project that we just started this year in a social action commitee that I did not put on my activities list. Would it be ok to send this in as addition information, or is it discouraged to send so much stuff. FINALLY, I was not aware of the strong recommendation of only 4 recommendations, will 5 recommendations hurt my chances of getting in AT ALL?? I think they show very different aspects of my life (ex: research to art)

No there is nothing you need to do. As I stated previously, we ask for that information so we can match the information to your application. With out that information there is a chance recommendations will not be filed correctly since they can't match to your application. If you are concerned about that, then you should have your recommendations sent again.

The latest date for materials to arrive at our office to be considered for Early Decision is November 30.

It's your application. Send what you want, but do know that supplemental information may not be reviewed due to time constraints of the staff.

It will not hurt your chances, but once again due to time constraints one of your extra letters of recommendation may be ignored.

Is there any way to confirm if my art porfolio made it to admissions? Its just that the folder is handmade and it took me a while to make. The slides also cost a lot of money to do over.
Last question: Do you personally think sending in final grades on Nov. 30 will make a difference in consideration for early decision?
Thanks for the quick response!

Since art portfolios and slides are supplemental parts (not required) of the application, our Operations team does not confirm receipt of such materials. You can safely assume that if you mailed the materials in and they included easily idenitfiable information to match the supplements to your application ... that everything has been processed correctly. If you are really desperate to find out if the portfolio has been received, you can send an email to the Admissions representative for your region, which you can find that information here: http://apply.jhu.edu/contact/staff.html.

The Admissions Committee does appreciate having the most recent available grades prior to making a decision. If the counselors feel more information is needed about a student before rendering a decision, we will contact your school to obtain the most recent grades. But, yes you should submit your first quarter / second quarter / or mid-year grades if they become available prior to Dec. 1st.

You will be mailed an acknowledgment postcard after your application is received and processed. Because of the volume of records being handled, we regret that we are not able to identity which individual application items have been received.

Rest assured that application files are checked carefully for completeness. We will contact students whose applications remain incomplete. Those students will be given an opportunity to provide us with any missing items before we complete the evaluation of their applications.

For recomendation letters I will have one from an AP American History teacher and Molecular Genetics teacher that by the time I apply will have known me for a little over one year. However my music teacher has been teaching me for over eight years and has watched me grow up from elementary school through high school, I do not plan on majoring in music but will keep playing Viola for fun. Would there be any relevance in receiving a recommendation letter from my music teacher instead of another AP teacher?

We really can't advice you on who you should ask to write your letters of recommendation. It is the choice of each and every applicant when applying, and the person or people you select adds information in the review of your application.

You are required to submit one letter of recommendation from an academic teacher. You may submit supplemental recommendations from other teachers or other people but we STRONGLY request not submitting more than a total of four letters of recommendation.

In choosing recommendation providers you should always make sure that each recommendation provider can provide detailed information about you and that if submitting multiple letters each letter is distinctive.

I'm a current dual-enrollment senior in need of help with the application process. The Common App website as well as the Johns Hopkins University profile on it says that you must submit a Counselor recommendation as well as a teacher recommendation. My dilemma is since I've moved twice in the last three years, that I have had multiple counselors and that, at the current time, I have two counselors; one counselor at the dual-enrollment program which I attend during the school year, and another who is my high school counselor. Which counselor of the three am I supposed to have for my recommendations?

Hopefully an answer to my question is obtainable.

In your situation, your counselor letter of recommendation must be completed by your current high school guidance counselor. That counselor is also responsible for submitting the school portion of your application: your high school transcripts and secondary school report. Do note that if you have switched schools, we require official transcripts from all the schools you have attended.

hey,

1)My question is a simple one. For GC and Teacher Recs, do the teachers have to mail it back to JHU or should i collect everything and send it together. because if GC sends at one time and teachers at another, there is more room for something going missing and more trouble for JHU.

2)Also, if an applicant applies Online, does that mean he or she does not have to send any mail app. package to JHU? I am kind of confused about what i have to mail or can i do it all online? By the way, i am an international applicant. I know you can apply online.. however, i am not quite sure if that means no further paper mailing is needed.

3)Would sending like 5 letters of recs be considered too much. i know you recommended 4 .. however is there some sort of negative view of people who send more.

4)Since i will be applying to 8 or 9 schools, can the recommendation be a letter that is general for all schools or does it have to be the specific Johns Hopkins Teacher Evaluation Form.

Thanks

Letters of recommendation should be sent by your school and teacher so that they are considered official. If the student is to send letters of recommendation they must be in sealed envelopes by the teachers with the signature over the envelope seal.

All applicants should apply online this year; Johns Hopkins is requesting students not submit paper applications. On the online application pages there are clear instructions on submitting all parts of one's application. The student portion of the application can be completed online, but school supplemental information (letters of rec, transcripts, school report) and test scores need to be submitted differently.

Quote
3)Would sending like 5 letters of recs be considered too much. i know you recommended 4 .. however is there some sort of negative view of people who send more.

Johns Hopkins University DOES NOT WANT more than 4 letters of recommendation. Two are required; one from a guidance counselor and one from a teacher. Students may submit two additional letters of recommendation if they choose, but once again we do not want more than 4 total letters.

Quote
4)Since i will be applying to 8 or 9 schools, can the recommendation be a letter that is general for all schools or does it have to be the specific Johns Hopkins Teacher Evaluation Form.

If you are using the Johns Hopkins Online Application then you need to use the Johns Hopkins forms for evaluation forms. If you apply with the Common Application Online then you need to use the Common Application forms for letters of recommendation. Do not mix and match application materials across the Johns Hopkins Online Application and the Common Application.
