Merit-based scholarships
« on: January 22, 2008, 08:37 PM »
I read on the website that application for the Hodson Trust Scholarship is not necessary (as every freshman applicant will be considered).  I was curious, however, as to whether or not the final transcript would play a role in determining whether or not a person awarded the scholarship could keep it.

For instance, if a student were to get the scholarship and had straight A's but on their final transcript they had a B, could the scholarship be "rescinded" similar to an admit decision (if performance suffers dramatically?)

Finally, are the scholarship winners notified via mail in April?

Thank you.

* Correct. There is no additional application to be considered for our merit-based scholarships including the Hodson Trust Scholarship. All freshman applicants to Hopkins will be considered for our scholarships.
http://apply.jhu.edu/finaid/scholarships.html

* All scholarship recipients are notified at the end of March when regular decision notifications are released.

* Early Decision admits are considered for merit based aid just like Regular Decision applicants.

* All scholarship notifications are sent through the mail. We do not release these decisions via email nor over the phone.

* The final transcript does not play a role in the awarding of merit based scholarships since we do not have that information when decisions are made.

* Just like one's admission, one's scholarship award is contingent on the successful completion of high school. During the summer the Admissions Committee reviews final transcripts, and if a student is seen as having a serious decline in performance their admission and scholarship (if applicable) could be in jeopardy.

Information on merit based scholarships offered by Johns Hopkins University can be found here: http://apply.jhu.edu/finaid/scholarships.html. There are no additional application forms for applicants to be considered for our merit-based awards. All applicants will be reviewed for merit based aid.

Please note we offer only approximately 80 merit scholarship awards each year to our admitted students, and all awards are partial scholarships. There are no specific admissions criteria to be considered for scholarships, however since we offer so few awards, the process of awarding scholarships is highly selective. Only the top echelon of our admitted students in all application categories will be offered such awards, therefore we can not quantify one's chances for receiving a merit-based scholarship in terms of GPA nor SAT/ACT scores.. For that reason, we strongly  encourage students to also review our Financial Aid web site: http://www.jhu.edu/finaid/.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if this question has already been answered but I couldn't find it.
Okay, I applied pretty early to JHU, not early decision though, and as my first "Academic Interest" on the Common App, I put pre-med. Now I'm looking at the Scholarships on the WUSTL Pathway, and for the majority it says that I had to rank the College of Arts and Sciences as my first choice on my application for admission. Is pre-med in the College of Arts and Sciences? I know pre-med isn't even a major at JHU, but it let me choose that on the Common App. Am I still okay to apply for the scholarships?
Thanks,
Sara

Every school considers the requirements for and awarding of merit-based scholarships quite different. Because one school such as Washington University has certain policies for their scholarships, does not mean the same is true for Johns Hopkins University.

As mentioned previously on this thread, information on merit based scholarships offered by Johns Hopkins University can be found here: http://apply.jhu.edu/finaid/scholarships.html. There are no additional application forms for applicants to be considered for our merit-based awards. All applicants will be reviewed for merit based aid.

As far as your question, applicants to Hopkins do not apply to specific schools and therefore you do not have to signify a specific school, a specific academic path, or specific major to be considered for scholarships.

Finally, please be aware we offer only approximately 80 merit scholarship awards each year to our admitted students, and all awards are partial scholarships. There are no specific admissions criteria to be considered for scholarships, however since we offer so few awards, the process of awarding scholarships is highly selective.

HI,  I was wondering whom I could talk to with a question about the Hodson Trust scholarship.  Specifically, as a former employee of Beneficial Corp. I know that the scholarship is open to employees' children, because one of my children received the scolarship and graduated from Hopkins.  My question is related to my grandchildren.  Is there any provision of the trust which addresses this topic?  Would appreciate any help you can give

Thanks.

You will need to contact the Office of Student Financial Services to discuss aid options for dependents of former employees of the Beneficial Corp. You can contact them at fin_aid@jhu.edu or 410-516-8028.
