Hi,

I am in my junior year, taking AP Calculus AB, instead of BC. I could take BC. In order to get A, I decided to take AB.  Is that choice considered not rigorous ?
Thank you
carol

Taking AP Calculus AB is seen as taking a rigorous class. Taking AP Calculus BC is seen as taking an even more rigorous class.

Is there any Hopkins preference for taking AP subject exams vs. SAT subject tests?

Thanks!

AP exams and SAT II subject exams are not related exams so there is no stated preference for one over the other. Hopkins recommends applicants taking the strongest possible curriculum available to them in their high schools and that if often AP programs. We want to see applicants taking AP courses and AP exams, and weigh heavily the rigor associated with AP courses and exam scores.

As far as SAT II subject exams Hopkins recommends but does not require them. See our standardized exam policy Web page for full details: http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/testreqs.html

Hello! I was wondering, does JHU accept credits from AP courses taken in a high school setting? If it does, then I would be getting approximately 39 credits.

Sorry if this has been asked multiple times now...but I was wondering how does admissions feel about students who "self study" an AP course? Does it even make a difference?

Not sure what you mean when you say "how does admissions feel" so I am not sure I will provide you with the answer you are seeking. We prefer students to take the most rigorous curriculum available to them at their high school while still maintaining high academic performance. We would not suggest a student "self study" for an AP course when their school offers the AP course. If one's school does not offer the AP course then our first suggestion is to seek out an alternate way to take the course such as an online option. If that option is not feasible, then working through an independent study which entails self-study for the AP -- something sponsored by one's school -- is our other recommendation.

As far as AP exam scores, all that matters is the exam score when matched to possible academic credit. An AP exam score is weighted the same way whether a study took a course or self-studied.

Sorry that I didn't clarify. I meant does it make an applicant look better/does it give the applicant an "edge"?

No, it does not look better nor give an applicant an edge in the review process.

I noticed an inconsistency regarding the AP credit policy for BC calculus. One of the links states that a 4 on the AP exam gets 4 credits. The other link states that a 4 gets 8 credits. Can you clarify? Thanks.

I took four AP exams this May; Micro, Macro Economics, Chemistry, and Music Theory
I was simply wondering what the score range should be for me to confidently submit the scores?
I appreciate your time and effort before hand.
Thank you very much!

Our AP credit policy related to the BC Calculus exam changed recently. The Admissions site (http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/apib.html) has the most updated information which is 4 credits for a score of 3 or 4 and 8 credits for a score of 5.

Applicants to Johns Hopkins University are required to report (self-report on their application) scores on all AP exams taken. There is no score choice with regard to AP exam scores. If you have taken an AP exam in any subject we request you report those scores no matter what the score on the exam.

Enrolling freshmen only need to submit official AP/IB score reports if they want to receive academic credit.

Hi! I know we shouldn't take exams for subjects that Hopkins doesn't give credit for. As for the ones that Hopkins does give credit for, should we take them even if we intend on doing a major in another area? For example - if I was planning on majoring in Political Science, should I still take the AP Exam for AP Chemistry? Thank you.

The decision as to whether to take an AP exam or not is a decision each student must make on their own; the Admissions Committee does not provide such advice. If you take AP exams for which Johns Hopkins awards credit and you get the specified score, then you are able to receive that credit even if you are not planning on majoring in a related subject.

Prospective student self reports AP scores on the Common App. Does submitting official AP score has any bearing on the admission decision?  May I send my official AP scores along with the application?

Thanks

Applicants to Johns Hopkins University do not need to send official copies of their AP / IB scores by the application deadline. We do require that a student self-report their AP/IB scores on their application. If you are admitted to Johns Hopkins and choose to enroll, you will then be required to have the testing agencies official send all of your AP / IB scores to our Office of Academic Advising.

Johns Hopkins University does not grant sophomore standing. All first-year students enroll as freshmen no matter how many credits they bring in via AP/IB/transfer.

Hello, I was wondering if I took Calculus AB and Calculus BC and received a 5 on both exams, if I could get credit for taking Calculus I and II, and just go straight into taking Linear Algebra.

Thanks,
Jack

As explained on our AP / IB credit chart (http://apply.jhu.edu/apply/apib.html?main), a 5 on AP Calculus BC will provided you 8 credits which equals Calculus I and Calculus II. You can then register for any math class beyond those areas.

If i took the AP Calculus BC exam and got a 3 or 4 according to the Johns Hopkins AP Policy i would be exempt from taking Calculus I, but is it possible for me to still take the math placement test and if i get a high enough score can i be exempt from Calculus II? What does the Math placement test cover, does it cover up to Calculus II?
