Hi

I'm thinking of attending the Hopkins pre-college program this summer. I just wanted to know if attending this program will have any effect on admission. (I'm applying in 2008).

Summer programs are great at any university, not just at Hopkins.  We like to see students who are taking advantage of summer opportunities if they have them.  I think the best part of doing a summer program at JHU is that it allows students to really get to know Baltimore, and more specifically Johns Hopkins University in all facets including campus life, academic quality and student engagement.  It allows students see if JHU is a great fit for them and a place that they want to be for four years.  That in turn is of the utmost value.

Does Hopkins offer summer preparatory courses for admitted students? Or any summer programs for accepted students? I have yet to take Calculus and plan to take it over the summer, does JHU encourage that or will that be covered if I'm accepted?

Yes Johns Hopkins does have Summer Programs that are offered to high school students as well as enrolling students. Complete information can be found here:

http://www.jhu.edu/summer/

It really is up to the student whether they want to do a JHU Summer program before the start of the fall semester. Many of the students who have done such express that it was fun experience and they got to learn more about Hopkins and Baltimore, as well as get some academic credit.

Check out the site and contact the Summer Office for more information.

Hi, my name is Alex and I am a high school freshmen. I really like Hopkins for many reasons (diversity, courses, extracurriculars). Anyway, during the past 2 summer I tooks some of the Hopkins courses they offer at camps for high school students throughout the country. I'm taking another this upcoming summer and next summer. I was wondering if these stand out on a future application? Also, i heard the Hopkins is openning a new leadership camp at the Priceton campus. If so, is there any information on it? Thank you for the help!

Hey Alex!

It's great that you have participated in the various programs sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). Unfortunately the CTY programs are run by separate office then the Office of Undergraduate Admissions - so to learn about any program/camp being created at Princeton you would have contact their office directly. Here are the contact details:

Web site: http://cty.jhu.edu/
Phone: (410) 735-6277
Email: ctyinfo@jhu.edu

As far as your other question, any kind of summer academic enrichment experience can benefit one's application to college. When admissions counselors review a student's application, we pay particular attention to how a student pursued their academic passions outside the classroom and went beyond the traditional academic offerings. Students who attend programs like CTY are definitely showing these characteristics. However, do note that having attended these summer programs through Hopkins does not provide a student with a specific advantage when applying to Hopkins.

And finally, since you enjoy these summer experiences, in the future you may want to look into the programs put on through the Office of Summer Studies. They sponsor Pre-College and Discover Hopkins programs throughout the summer for high school students. Information can be found here: http://www.jhu.edu/summer/.

does hopkins look favorably on the jhu precollege program even if grades weren't up to par? When I took intro to biological molecules, I didn't realize that "Introductory Chemistry" meant "College Introductory Chemistry." <_< and so I went into that class with Chem 1 (high school style) and, I must say,  it was a pretty unique experience. Hopefully, I will never be that lost in a class again.

well actually, i'm expecting to be that lost in orgo.  :)

[I joke.]

and thanks for everything! I would also like to echo everyone else's statement: You guys have really provided a valuable source of information and a level of access to the admissions office that many schools haven't. I really wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put in. If you reject or admit me, I'll be happy either way [but I will be ecstatic if you admit me  ] because I know some amazing people will be reading my application.

and hey, there's always med school, graduate school, teaching opportunities, residency, etc.  so you'll see me someday on campus. :)

Thanks for the wonderful comments and we are so glad to hear that you find our efforts helpful. I know I speak for all the students when I say we enjoy helping out, but it is always nice to hear that people find our efforts to be helpful.

As far as your question, attending the JHU Pre-College Program is more important to us then the grades one obtains. The grades are looked at, but we understand that at times the rigor of the courses is quite tough. Pre-College is a great academic enrichment achievement, and as I mentioned above that can only help a student's application.

Best of luck.

Hi!
I was wondering... most colleges look at what you do in your free time during the summer. as far as like the different programs to go into, which one looks better to admissions officers? there are like pre-college programs at different colleges (i have been recently looking at the ones at like yale and harvard), or like courses at my community college or governors schools in states.

I'm definitely not an admissions rep, but I think I can provide some perspective on this question. I don't think there are any particular programs that college admissions favor more than another; do what you enjoy doing, have fun during your summer breaks (they are "breaks" for a reason), and don't worry as much about what's to come (i.e. college admissions) when you can be focusing on the here and now.

Summer programs are definitely a great way of getting to know a certain school better, though. While many of the students at Hopkins are away over the summer, there are a ton of programs catering to high school students--from to Lacrosse camp to the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Programs No matter which program you do (if any at all), the experience of living away from home temporarily (given you don't go to boarding school) is one I wish I had had before coming to college.

As has been previously answered on this discussion thread, summer programs are a great idea to get a feel for the college experience and they can not hurt your college application. I also agree with Jermaine's answer ... don't just do a summer program for your college application. Do them for the experience.

As far as the different programs, one will not be ranked any higher than another. If you do a program through Hopkins, or another school, or a Governor's Program, or Community College courses, or etc. etc. -- they will all be considered as academic enrichment programs that bolster your academic profile.

But remember do them for yourself ... not just to look good when you apply to college.

Greetings all, I am William Hilton and I currently attend Northview High School in Dothan, AL and should be moving to Lynn Haven, FL for my sophomore year. I have been interested in Hopkins for quite some time and would like to attend your summer and/or Pre-College programs. Though my father is a doctor and has not off-time and my mother would not be able to take me to Hopkins over the summer. Thus, I want to ask if you have any on or off-campus housing for high school students attending your summer and/or pre-college programs. If so, will the cost of this housing be included in the tuition of these programs or will I need to pay an extra fee. Thank you for your time.

Thanks Blake for adding the Link.

William,

Check out the web site for the JHU Summer Programs. It provides full details on applying for the program, how the program works, how housing works, and the costs. If you have further questions about the Summer Programs you should contact their office at:

Yes, I have heard of Wetumpka, a town of a little over 5,000 in Elmore County, which is one of the most rapidly growing counties in Alabama. Thank you for the information, both Blake and Daniel, and I feel more comfortable now knowing that JHU offers housing. Moreover, I am proud to hear that someone from Southeastern Alabama attends JHU and hope another from the same area may as well!

Hey, I was wondering how much these programs cost because I believe the website doesn't say anything about any fees/tuition/etc. needed and this type of experience must have some cash involved other than airfare.

The cost of summer programs varies depending the program you choose and the duration of the program. We can not speak about any summer programs not affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, so you will have to research them on your own.

For CTY programs, you will need to review their web site for details on all the programs they offer: http://cty.jhu.edu/

For the Johns Hopkins Pre-College programs, you can review the tuition and fees for the various programs here: http://www.jhu.edu/summer/precollege/tuition/index.html
