Is it desirable to submit a portfolio of published essays as supplementary material to an application?

How many samples would you recommend?

Thanks!

BobbyB,

Feel free to submit supplemental materials that you believe are important.  Be mindful about how much you submit and keep in mind that your supplements will not be returned.  Take care!

I submitted my application, but I realized that I have a circumstance I would like the selection commitee to know about. Can I still send the explanation and will this have a negative effect on my application. When are the deadline for submitting transcripts. I took a class at a community college.

You may add supplemental information to your application throughout the month of January. For the items (a letter to the Admissions Committee and/or college transcripts) please make sure they are postmarked no later than January 16 so that they arrive no later than February 1.

Am I allowed to submit supplements that will help you know me better? If so, what is the limit for the amount of supplements?

Applicants to Johns Hopkins University may submit supplemental information such as CDs, DVDs, slides, art portfolios, and other such items. There is no additional forms that need to be completed nor do we have a preference regarding format. We do request that you include your full name, birth date, and high school on any supplement materials you send in. All information needs to be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Please note that this information will not be sent to academic departments for official reviews, but will remain in the Admissions Office with your application. There is no guarantee that supplemental information will be reviewed, but in most cases the Admissions committee will have some time to evaluate such additional information. Finally, it is important that original items not be sent, as the Admissions office is not able to return submitted application materials.

Hi

Is it ok if I submit my entire application in a binder...I just want to put the application and some supplementary materials (like pictures, research paper, etc.) It would be more convenient for me to organize it that way.

Thanks

Yes you may mail your application in a binder but it is completely unnecessary. Once our Operations team receives your application the binder will be discarded and all your materials will be stapled together and put into a folder. The Admissions committee will never see the binder.

I am a high-school senior (In India) in the process of applying to JHU. I was about to apply online and fedex the supplement forms, but I noticed that both need to be submitted by 1/1/2008.  Unfortunately, I am a bit late with the supplement forms (my high school tool longer than expected to prepare transcripts in US format and I had exams all month, so applications had to wait) and would like your advice on whether my application will be accepted if the supplement forms reach in the first week of Jan, 2008.  I will be completing the online application asap but even fedex takes 4-5 working days to deliver to the US from India (so first week of Jan).  Please advice if my supplement application will still be accepted.

thanks.

Ankit

The January 1st application deadline is a POSTMARK DEADLINE. That means that all application materials need to be either submitted online by 11:59 pm EST on January 1 or sent in the mail before January 1. If your supplemental information is mailed prior to January 1 then there is no problem. Materials can arrive after the deadline ... they just need to be mailed before it.

Hi.  I am a current high school junior who is looking to study chemistry and possibly Spanish in college.  However, a lot of my time in and out of school over the past few years has been dedicated to art classes.  Would it be potentially beneficial to submit an art portfolio as supplementary material even if I am not planning to pursue an art-related major?  Thanks!

Hopkins does not offer an art major, so everyone who submits art portfolios (and there is a decent amount each year) are primarily interested in art as an extracurricular activity.

If you feel an art portfolio will add to your application and reveal a side to you as a student and individual, then you may add one to your application. Read above for the details on submitting supplements to one's application.

Hello, my name is Jackie and I will be entering my senior year of high school this year and I plan to apply to JHU.  I was wondering if submitting a course description book from my high school would be of help to show that I have taken the hardest classes at my school.

Jackie,

Typically most schools will send something that is known to us admissions folks as the high school profile.  This profile is an overview and summary of your school in addition to a list of course offerings and some general information.  You need not send in a course catalog with your application.  This is also one of the reasons we read applications by region such that we have familiarity with the high schools.  Feel free to contact your regional counselor here:

Best,

I would like to send in some visual art and musical materials when I apply for the 2009 year, but I'm confused on how it all works. I am looking at the Common Application page for fall 2009 and in order to submit an art supplement I need a letter of recommendation from an arts instructor and a resume of my art experience. Also, it askes me to provide a link to the art work, so the admissions officers can view the art work online.

I do my artwork in my free time, so I do not have a resume nor an art instructor. Additionally, I would like to submit multiple drawings and musical works but the application only provides a space for one link.

Any clarification on the matter would be immensely appreciated! Thank you.

When applying to Johns Hopkins University one does not have to abide by the "Arts Supplement" rules of the Common Application. I explained the JHU policies about art supplements previously on this discussion thread (August 14, 2007 post) and those policies will hold true for the 2008-09 application cycle.

I would like to submit an athletic suppliment if possible.

What kind of information will you look for in an athletic suppliment?

Shall the diplomas I earned be faxed or mailed?

What primary factors shall the suppliment contain?

btw, I'm wondering if JHU has a varsity swim team~~~~  I would like to contact with the coach if possible!

Previous student mentioned by about the school information.

I'm an international student, and my school don't have such brouchures to introduce itself and its courses.

Will it be adequate that I write those introductions myself and ask for my high school's confirmation? I mean, I will write in English and then translate the meaning to my school so that I can submit a school introduction with a cachet of my school.

There is no set requirements for any supplimental materials including athletic suppliments. You can include any information you choose.

Faxed materials are not considered official. All diplomas must be mailed and must be officially certified.

Yes, JHU has a Division III Men's and Women's swim team (they finished in 2nd place in the nation last year). Contact information for coaches can be found here: http://hopkinssports.cstv.com/school-bio/jhop-staff.html.

All high schools must have a high school profile. You should speak with your guidance counselor, as these forms are required by all colleges. We will not accept student-submitted write-ups about their schools. This high school profile must be submitted by your guidance counselor along with the secondary school report and high school transcript.

Can research abstracts be considered supplementary materials? If so, is it preferred that the admissions team receives only an abstract, and no additional material (no lab notebook, research paper, etc)?

Yes research abstracts can be submitted as supplemental materials. The Admissions Committee would prefer only the research abstract or a summary of the research experience. Since we have only 3-5 minutes tops to review supplemental materials, anything more would not be reviewed.

How long should a music supplement on a CD be? Should it hover in between the 3-5 minute time limit? I ask because for a music piece, that can be quite hindering.

For music CDs, we also request that students stay within the 3-5 minute range. The Admissions team does not have any more time than that range to focus on supplemental materials. If you submit a CD that is longer than 5 minutes, the Admissions reader will not listen to the entire CD.

We have 16,000+ applications to review and only 11 full-time readers ... we unfortunately can not spend ample time on reviewing supplemental materials.

Do these materials need to be postmarked by the application deadline date?

Hi, I really like this interactive website, very resourceful!

I applied early. i heard i would receive a postcard from admission office if they received all my materials. but i still have not gotten anything in mail. like all the other applicants, i am really anxious right now about the application.

another question is: may I submit any additional/updated information for my application, though the deadline passed?
Thanks.
