I checked and there is no limit on AP credit. I came in with more than 30 credits and it wasn't a problem. The only limit I know is that you can't transfer more than 12 credits from another college/university.

I think Daniel meant to say excluding not including.

Students who obtain grades of A or B on a University of London, University of Cambridge, or Oxford G.C.E. Advanced Level exam are eligible for credit commensurate with the comparable course at Hopkins. International curriculum students interested in receiving credit for other advanced-level studies may have their work evaluated by the appropriate academic departments. You will need to have your official scores submitted to your academic advisor over the summer for official review.

Hi AdmissionsDaniel and others,

I have earned 6 credit hours through the local community college. The first three (under elective) were from a leadership program I did like 4 years ago. The other 3 were from a concurrent enrollment class offered at my high school for CISCO computer networking academy program.

My question is will hopkins take these credits from my local community college?

When I asked this question of my academic advisor I wasn't really sure if I understood the answer completely {so Admissions can correct me if I'm wrong -- I'd be happy if I was!}, but what I gathered was this: credits earned from other colleges/universities will only be accepted if they were earned through courses that took place ON that college's campus.  I earned 12 credits through my local community college through the High School Plus Program {the 3rd and 4th years of my French and Latin classes counted as 101 and 102 levels of the same subject at the community college} but, as far as I've heard, I can't use them towards anything.  :(  It's a bummer because I would enjoy having that leeway, even if the credits just went toward my majors' distribution requirements {the certain number of credits you must take in areas outside that of your major} -- there are so many classes I'd love to take!

Lauren you're generally correct of course (oh those New Jersey students... so bright, talented, .. ok, I'll stop.)  The basic outline is you truly are not going to know which credits you will get until you arrive here on campus to meet with an advisor and then they can see the whole picture.

Most students want to know which credits will transfer prior to meeting their advisor, but understand that every student that enrolls at Hopkins is in the same position and it is over the summer that this meeting takes place.  There are no hard-and-fast rules to transferring credits so Academic Advising handles them on a one-on-one basis to make sure that every student gets their fair share of credit for the work they've completed prior to enrolling.

Well there is one hard-and-fast rule and that freshmen are limited to a maximum of 12 transfer credits.

Thanks so much to everyone who answered my question... and I realize now a simple search could have found this thread...

So, the off-campus credit not-being-awarded rule is not necessarily true?

Thanks,

Not sure what you are really asking here. We have already answered that transfer credit is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

From what I've read in this thread, if you take a community college class at your HS, you don't get the credit. But, you have answered this in that it's case-by-case.

Thanks

Yes, typically credit is not given for courses taken at one's high school. Only in rare cases where the academic advising office feels the courses completely resembles a collegiate course (i.e. with other college students, taught by a professor of that college, with the same curriculum as the parallel course offered at Hopkins) will credit be awarded.

I am a senior, in the top 10 in my class, have a 4.0 WEIGHTED gpa and a 3.2 unweighted Gpa, I am in the dual enrollment program at my high school so I have 37 dual credits from a community college and by the time i graduate high school I will have over 60 credits and will graduate with a general associates in college by may of 2009. I was in marching and concert band, robotics, drama and will be in BETA and NHS this year. I have taken 5 honors, 3 AP and 10 DE classes. Right now i'm doing 4 more DE classes. I have hundreds of community service hours and have an internship at Florida Hopsital. These are some of my questions/concerns:
1. Which one counts more, DE, AP, IB or honors?(in the DE hand bookit said that AP,IB and DE are weighted equally).
2. Will I recieve credit for my DE classes at JHU? ALL the classes that i took as DE, i took them on community college campus NOT in my high school.
3. Once i graduate high school, I will have a general associates in the community college. Will it be accpeted in JHU?
4. Am I considered a transfer student or a freshman?
5. Which gpa counts more, weighted or unweighted?
6. Is it true that JHU only gets the grades from 10th and 11th grade's cre classes and that is what the statistics for admissions is?
7. Do you HONESTLY think that my resume is enough to get into JHU? most people say that because im in DE that I'll get in but i have a feeling that all i've done is not enough...

P.S
I know that these are alot of questions but PLEASE answer them all for i have had each of these questions for a while.
Thank you so much.
This is so helpful:)

The Admissions Committee looks at AP, IB, and dual enrollment courses quite similarly. Simply put, these three levels of high school courses are considered the most rigorous available to students.

In advance of a student's admissions and enrollment, we are unable to inform you if college credit gained through a dual enrollment course will be accepted as official college transfer credit. For enrolling freshmen students, transfer credit is determined by the Academic Advising offices after final, official transcripts are received. Students entering Johns Hopkins from high school may not transfer more than 12 course credits from other colleges or universities. The determination of which credits will transfer will be made on a case-by-case basis by your assigned academic advisor over the summer during registration for courses. In most cases, in order to receive credit for courses, students must have earned a grade of C or above in courses comparable in content to those offered at Hopkins. Only courses taken at an accredited college or university will be accepted and each program will be reviewed separately.

Quote
3. Once i graduate high school, I will have a general associates in the community college. Will it be accpeted in JHU?

No, we will not consider your associates degree because the maximum number of credits you will be able to transfer is 12 credits.

Quote
4. Am I considered a transfer student or a freshman?

Freshman. The classifification of a transfer student is one who has graduated high school and fully enrolled in a college or university.

Quote
5. Which gpa counts more, weighted or unweighted?

They are both reviewed equally by the Admissions Committee.

Quote
6. Is it true that JHU only gets the grades from 10th and 11th grade's cre classes and that is what the statistics for admissions is?

10th and 11th grades are used to create a statistical average GPA. However, all courses a student has taken from 9th - 12th grade are factored in Admissions decisions.

7. Do you HONESTLY think that my resume is enough to get into JHU? most people say that because im in DE that I'll get in but i have a feeling that all i've done is not enough...

Sorry but one of the rules of these forums are that we do not comment on a student's chances for admission, nor do we answer questions about what a student needs to do to be admitted.

How many dual enrollments do you accept? Do you accept 60 or more? Because I have enough that I will earn my AA degree by the end of my senior year (2010).

Hello. My name is Gemariah Valencia and I am an upcoming senior.
This fall, I was planning on taking a few classes from Augusta State University while being a high school senior. I've known a number of students who have done this and got a few credits in the college they attended. However, I wasn't sure if Hopkins accepted college credits from Augusta State. Also, I was wondering which is better-- dual enrollment or taking a number of AP classes?

Please let me know.

Thank you,
Gem

The Admissions Committee does not have stated preference regarding AP/IB classes or college classes, and considers both to be the highest rigor one can pursue. It is important to note that a student will be limited to transferring 12 course credits from college courses however there is no credit limit places on AP/IB credit.

Hello,
My name is Robin Rowland, and I have some questions about applying to Johns Hopkins with college credits. As a 9th grader, I took 11th grade AP english and recieved credit for it, and I have moved on from there to other advanced english classes. I know you said you do not accept basic "introductory" english credits, but this year I am taking British Literature 1 and 2, at the 200 level. Would any of these credits transfer, since these are not basic classes, but on a higher level and more focused? I also have taken BIO 110 (basic introductory) and Psychology 110 (again, basic introductory) and other introductory classes in anthropology, sociology, and international relations. Would any of these transfer?
Thanks so much!

Please refer to the response I posted to the previous question. In advance of enrollment, we are unable to inform you what credits will be transferable outside of AP/IB exam credits. The determination of which credits will transfer will be made on a case-by-case basis by an assigned academic advisor over the summer during registration for freshman year courses. Most importantly, freshmen are limited to bringing in 12 transfer credits from outside universities.

I am currently a high school senior at School For Advanced Studies. At my school in the mornings we have a full load of college courses, and then in the afternoon we have all AP courses. I am going to graduate with over 100 college credits( and have taken courses such as General Chemistry 1, General Chemistry 2, Microbiology, and possibly even Organic Chemistry 1 all with their respective labs of course. How many of my credits would be accepted at Hopkins, if any at all.

just to quickly add, all of the dual enrollment courses were taken in the College. My high school is actually located within the college.

My high school office is located within a few portables around the back of the college, and in the mornings the college courses are inside the college, and taught by real college professors in a real college environment. Most of my science lecture courses had over 120 + students in the class.

Johns Hopkins University may accept academic credits taken online from accredited colleges of universities but there is not a pre-established specified list of schools. Enrolling students must submit official transcripts to their academic advisor for review.
