Hi,

Are applications for the Woodrow Wilson Undergraduate Research Fellowship evaluated with or without taking into consideration the rest of your application?

Thanks!

snoflake135 - Wilson fellowship applications are included in the application folders when they are passed to the Admissions counselors for application review. That means they will be looked at during the admissions review process, but typically they matter very little in the final review. The Wilson applications are ultimately reviewed by a selection committee made up of faculty who will review all Wilson applications from applicants admitted to the University.

darkhope - ED applicants may submit a Wilson fellowship application up until the RD deadline of January 1, 2007.

hi, I applied to the fellowship as a ED applicant and still haven't received notification, as of today. I was under the impression that they would decide after considering the RD pool... so should I wait a few more weeks for the mail?

  Thanks!  :D

All Wilson decisions were mailed on March 28. If you have not received notification then you need to contact the Wilson coordinator in the Admissions Office - Rachel Cowan at cowan@jhu.edu.

Did they send out notifications of negative decisions? I had just assumed no reply meant no fellowship.

Yeah, I didn't receive notification either. Should I just assume I didn't get it?

Notifications of awards are sent with the admit packets.  Letters of the award come a long with the offer of admission or in a smaller envelope for students who are admitted ED.

Keep in mind that if you are not offered a WWRF as an incoming freshman, you can still apply for it as a freshman once you are here.

Is the application for the Wilson program considered in the application for admission?

I feel that my Wilson application highlighted some great parts of high school that weren't necessarily discussed to such lengths on my regular application.

Thanks!

Please read the third post in this thread, as you question has already been asked and answered:

Hi,

I didn't apply for the Woodrow Wilson fellowship as a freshman, but I think that I might like to apply after my first year at Hopkins and a good bit of brainstorming about the topic I'd like to do research on.

My question regards the timeline:  the website says that "current first-year students are welcome to apply for sophomore fellowship standing by contacting the program coordinator directly by e-mail at Woodrow_Wilson@jhu.edu."

However, it also notes:
"Deadline for Rising Sophomores: May 16, 2008.
You will be notified of the results in June."

My three questions:

Is there any advantage to submitting a research proposal significantly earlier than May 16th (can you start doing research THAT school year or do you have to wait until the fall of your sophomore year either way)?

Also, when the program asks for your resume, is that a "research" resume or is it simply a list of activities you are involved in at Hopkins?

And, lastly, if one doesn't receive the fellowship, is it still possible to pursue an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor (through personal instead of school-supplied funding)?

Thank you very much for your help.

The selection process of Woodrow Wilson Fellows after the freshman admissions cycle has nothing to do with the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Therefore we can not assist with these questions.

You will need the contact the program staff directly:

You can always look for faculty whose research interests are similar to what you're interested in and contact them. You can also apply for the Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards and get some funding ($3,000) to do research over the semester or summer

Hello,

If we are interested in the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship (on the recently released supplement, it is #7), how do we apply? It said to "learn more about the fellowship and apply at jhu.edu/woodrowwilson." However, I went there, and it seems outdated, at least the PDF file was (from 2007) and it was from the old Johns Hopkins application (which I understand that you no longer use). Does that mean that JHU will just consider the applicant through the supplement if she/he said that she was interested in the fellowship?

Thanks.

Thanks for posting your question, as it made us realize that the web pages had to be updated for the new application cycle. That process is complete now.

To apply for the Woodrow Wilson, you do so online here:
http://apply.jhu.edu/wilson/index.html

There is an online form you need to complete and a space for you to attach your Woodrow Wilson application response. This online form and essay must be submitted to be considered for the Woodrow Wilson fellowship.

Complete details can also be found here:
http://www.jhu.edu/woodrowwilson/apply.html

Thank you. I am also wondering about the following: for those who have participated in the fellowship, what was your project/research and how time consuming was it? What influenced your desire to study and research whatever you chose?

I'm quite interested in this program and am wondering how this experience was for others.

Thanks  :)

None of the current students who answer questions on these forums are Wilson fellows. One of our former bloggers was a Wilson fellow and here is a link to an entry she wrote as her project came to an end:
http://hopkins.typepad.com/michelleb/2008/...row-wilson.html

I also recommend this discussion thread that has many students talking about research at Hopkins:
http://www.hopkins-interactive.com/forums/academics-the-insider-perspective/research-questions/

You can also use the Woodrow Wilson web site to read about various different fellows and their projects:
http://krieger.jhu.edu/woodrowwilson

And finally, this recent Gazette article talks about some of the recent fellows:

Is the application for a Woodrow Wilson fellowship due at the same time as the application if you are applying early?  Or can the fellowship application be submitted afterward?

The deadline to apply for the Woodrow Wilson Research fellowship is the regular decision deadline of January 1, 2010. You apply for the fellowship through the following web site: http://apply.jhu.edu/wilson/index.html. Early Decision applicants can submit their Wilson application at the time they file or their ED application or wait to submit up closer to the RD deadline. If you will hold off an applying for the Wilson fellowship, do make sure to mention your plans to apply for the Wilson in your ED application. Students are notified of receipt of the Wilson fellowship at the time Regular Decision notifications are released.

For the Woodrow Wilson application, where it says 'provide an example of a possible project you might choose to pursue' are we meant to submit ideas that we are interested in and why or an actual full research proposal?

Thank you for your time!

The prompt is left open-ended to allow each applicant to decide how they want to respond to the question. You may choose to present an actual research proposal or discuss idea(s) that you may want to pursue. Answering "why" you are interested in the fellowship is an important part of your response as well. There is no one right way to answer the question.
