Best Of ... Late Night Snack Spot
« on: October 17, 2010, 11:44 AM »
To go completely off topic from the Freshman 15...where is the best place to get a late night snack?! I often find myself needing an energy boost after spending hours of studying/exercising/sleeping/working. Personally, I often go to Charles Market (often known as charmar) which is conveniently located right next to Wolman Hall. But once in a while, I'd like to go somewhere else. Any suggestions?

University Market! Either the steak egg and cheese (see my blog) or the "Special with Egg" are both good choices.  Note: The special with egg is not on the menu, but if you ask they know what your talking about.

I don't really eat all that late at night...but when I am hungry, I like going to Coldstone and Chipotle. Both accept JCash, and they are both really close to McCoy. :)

Hmm I like the FFC late night when I really want a snack since they are pretty close to the AMRs.

I love the mozzarella sticks at uni mini (oh hey late summer nights!).
Now that I've got a kettle/stove, I like making miso or eating cookies (from Nolan's!) with milk.

Last year, late night was lots of fun to go to (especially with unlimited meal swipes).

I have such a strong aversion to eating late at night, I think it is because of all of those years growing up where after dinner the kitchen was closed.

But a lot of students like Uni Mini (Nick being my perfect example here), and Subway is open 24/7, 7-11 down by the Homewood Apartments is also always open, Maxie's, the pizza place, is also open late. You also always have CharMar, Nolan's and the FFC if you're on a dining plan too.

Basically if you're hungry after hours, they is probably something near Hopkins that'll fit your needs.

I am really bad about not eating late at night, because I am up way too late. I LOVED late night freshman year, so much fun! But now that I no longer have a meal plan, I like making my own sandwiches or the uni mini breakfast sammiches are definitely good! I like the crabcake one :) and sausage egg and cheese (don't judge me)

This is such an appropriate question since I ate so much ice cream late last night and couldn't fall asleep for forever.  I love the ice cream sandwiches at Charles Street Market.  They're so good!!!!  They have Dibs there too - those chocolate covered ice cream bites.  YUM.  It just doesn't get any better than chocolate and ice cream.

FFC Late Night Breakfast was a lifesaver freshman year. I don't know how I've gone two years without it. But as everyone else has mentioned, Uni Mini & Char Mar are late night institutions. And Char Mar now has milkshakes and smoothies, making it that much harder to stay away from satisfying those late night cravings.

However, I don't think anyone has mentioned yet that there are a ton of Chinese restaurants that deliver to dorms/apartments well into the night. We definitely take advantage of take-out during late night study sessions or if we're too lazy to cook (which is a lot, for those of us who live off campus).
Plus, Tamber's has a take-out menu and they're open pretty late as well!

So maybe it's because we've never had a pizza by the slice place in Charles Village before (how'd we survive? I'm not sure), or maybe it's because not too many places are open that late, or maybe it's because I'm not on dining dollars,  but Maxie's would definitely have to be my new late night snacking pick.

I'd also have to agree with you guys about Maxie's - their pizza is amazing! SO GOOD. Especially the bruschetta one (I'm quite sure Clint will agree with me on this since one time Clint and I killed a whole pizza).

Uni Mini tends to be the go-to since it's pretty close to my apartment building. Another favorite is Hopkins Deli - they're not open super late (11PM?) but they have the best pizza in the area since the ingredients are imported from New Jersey.

Maxie's is also great, but it is a little bit far from where my apartment is. 7/11 is also good for those quick late-night library snacks.

Maxie's is 100% wonderful - the kitchen is open until they close and, if you stick around til closing, you can even get some pretty great pizza deals since they're trying to get rid of the slices for the next day. The staff is great and friendly as well, and every time I walk in I feel like I'm on Cheers or something - they all know you if you go often enough so it's a really comfortable, warm place to grab food and do work in the daytime, have a good dinner with friends, or go out at night {since there's a bar downstairs}. In terms of their food, I'm in love with their Buffalo Chicken pizza and the new Chicken Alfredo pizza, yummmm!

So, if I'm out on the weekend downtown, Vaccaro's in Little Italy is perfect.  They close at midnight, so it's nice to have a leisurely dinner then walk from wherever you ate to Vaccaro's and indulge a bit more (okay, maybe a lot more).

Around campus, my go-to spot is unimini.  Egg and cheese sandwich for $2 even?  Perfect.  I'm also a fan of the mozzarella sticks.  My most common late-night snack is ice cream that I get at Eddies and ALWAYS have in my freezer.  It's getting to be a problem.

For late night food I tend to go to Unimini (Cheeseburger subs with everything on it are DIVINE), or go to 7-11 (taquitos and Arizona iced tea anyone?). But in general I try to get food before hand (veggies or something light), since eating late at night is very unhealthy (you're usually very sedative late at night, so you don't burn any of the calories off, and then they turn to fat. This is where the freshmen 15 comes from!).

It's got to be UniMini. I know it's been said, but I'm going to switch it up...

I do love me some Bacon, Egg and Cheese Hoagie...but my favorite late night snack is one of those GIANT Baklava.

I'll finish one of those with a Sprite and be good to keep working for at least 15 to 16 more hours straight.

Considering I go there most nights after a late night at the library or hanging out with friends, I have to say UniMini. Their chicken parm sandwiches are absolutely incredible. You also get a free soda (any size!) with a sub of 10 inches, so that's the deal I always take advantage of.

Definitely UniMini, there are sooooo many different things you could get there but I prefer the steak egg and cheese hoagie and their mozarella sticks (or even strips and fries). Going to UniMini on almost any night shows you that lots of Hopkins students agree that UniMini is the best place to go cause it gets realllllly crowded (even during the week!)

CharMar is also a great place for food late at night, especially because they take dining dollars and if you have an all dining dollar plan like I do (or you don't want to have to spend your own money) CharMar is great. They have subs, paninis, salads, and a bunch of other stuff that you can make yourself if you have a microwave or toaster oven.

Basically what I tell everyone on my tours is always true: if you get hungry at Hopkins, no matter what time it is, you'll definitely be able to find an awesome place to get food.

UniMini has everything! I've found myself going there for frosting, soda, and even sandwiches like a bacon, egg, and cheese!  And it's practically right next to Coldstone. :P

I really hate eating late at night (probably because I eat so much during the day and am stuffed by midnight) but I end up going to CharMar at all hours, especially for a good library break. I also just went to Nolan's for the first time with some sophomore friends and it was AMAZING. I had my first smoothie since coming to Hopkins, A+.

Bulk candy from Char Mar is excellent, and it's funny how fast it runs out during exams--everybody has like five pound bags of gummy worms or raisinettes on their desk as they work. They're pretty easy to sneak past the security guards/food police as well! Not that any of us ever eat in the library...
