Many of us have really cool jobs on campus, and I thought a topic about them would be interesting. So, what are some cool Hopkins jobs that you have/have had? Or some jobs that your friends have had?

For me, it's definitely being a chem lab TA, hands down. And next year my cool job will be being an RA!

So, what say you all? =)

A lot of my friends work JHU phone-a-thon. It's not necessarily "cool", but it pays well and the hours and flexible. :)

I know some people that work as the front desk student "monitor" for on-campus dorms like the AMRs and Charles Commons. They rent out games, kitchenware, etc., and have the keys to the multipurpose rooms in the AMRs. From what I hear, it's nice because when you're not loaning something out to someone, you can do your school work at the desk.

I work as a research assistant in the School of Medicine about 16 hours a week. It's hard work, but it pays really well and is actually really exciting.

Being a Resident Advisor has been a cornerstone of my time at Hopkins. I was a summer RA for the Pre-College program for the summers after my Freshman and Sophomore years and am a school-year RA for my third year. It has definitely been the most enjoyable and fulfilling job I've had so far and has really made my time at JHU great.

A lot of great jobs have already been mentioned, and I was actually chosen to be an RA next year as well, but I would still have to say that I think either of my jobs in Admissions are the best. For one of them I get to do all of the web design on Hopkins Interactive, and work with our amazing videographers to produce our new videos, and for the other I get to come manage events in Mason Hall on weekends and basically get paid to do my homework or study for exams. Sometimes I even get to manage events in Shriver like the ICCAs where you'd normally have to pay to get in, and instead I get paid to be at the event!

I love my job in admissions!  It used to be a student job, until I graduated in December and was no longer a student.  But one of my favorite parts is giving the daily information sessions for visitors to campus.  I'm not great at public speaking, but I've gotten a bit better already and I love talking with visitors about my experience at Hopkins!  Also, I'm not sure if it would count since I was only allowed to do it after graduating, but reading applications is amazing.

I don't have an on-campus job myself, but a lot of my friends work at the Office of Study Abroad. They absolutely love it. It's a small office with a mostly undergraduate staff, and they're super-informed about so many awesome programs. I definitely took advantage of their wealth of knowledge when figuring out where to study abroad this summer!

My favorite on campus job has definitely been my job with the Pre-College program. I was an RA with Pre-College for the last two summers, and really enjoyed it. I met so many people, made some great friends, learned a lot of new valuable skills, and got paid to do it all!

If you're interested in making some extra money during your time at school, or are looking for another activity, I'd definitely suggest looking for a job on campus. The school makes it really easy to find one too - there's job fairs several times a year, and the Student Job website is really helpful too.

Just wanted to throw another one out there -- working as a barista at Cafe Q, our library's cafe.  It looks like it gets super busy sometimes, but they also get all the coffee they could possibly want.  We actually have a guest blog about working there!  http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/guest/2010/04/best-of-the-guest-blog-v-life-behind-the-bar/

A lot of people I know have jobs doing research. They're getting paid a decent salary ($10-$12/hr) to get incredible experience that will help them get into a good graduate program! I can't think of any better deal than that...

Congrats on being an RA, Dominique! That's so exciting.

I really love my job in Admissions. Mason Hall is a great place to work and I share a job with my roommate, which is just an added bonus. Most of my non-school stuff on campus revolves around Admissions so it's really convenient, and I love being involved in the admissions process--it's so cool to see who the next class of fabulous Hopkins kids will be!

Although I am biased, I LOVE my job at Center for a Livable Future at the School of Public Health. Not only do I get paid to learn more about public health outside of the classroom (the Center focuses on promoting research on our food system) but I am have a great supervisor, an amazing director to look up to, and co-workers who I treat like sisters. On top of everything, we get to sit on fitness balls! I couldn't be happier with my job.

I work at the JHU Writing Center as a tutor for undergrad and graduate students who need a bit of help writing essays, personal statements, thesis projects, and anything in between. It's a lot of fun, pays really well, and helps me feel like I'm really using my skills to benefit others. You can read more about my job on my blog!

I also work a bunch of hours in Admissions each week and, for two semesters and two summers during my undergrad years, I've held internships in Media Relations, Public Relations, Publications, and Television Production. Working at college has been an amazing experience for me - not only have I been able to make money that allowed me to live/eat comfortably and to more fully explore Baltimore, but I've learned so much and met so many great people in the process. It makes me feel like I'm being really productive, especially when I feel like I've hit a wall in academics or extracurriculars. There's always something new to do in one of these three jobs - it keeps life exciting!

So my current job on campus is opening mail and stuff upstairs in Mason. It's pretty easy and not that hard, until work slows down and you have to put prospective students into the system.

I love love LOVE my job as a videographer.  I knew I needed a job when I went to college, and was scared they were all going to be some varient of ,"sit at a desk and swipe people into the library/rec center/dorm/etc." so when I saw a post on the Hopkins Class of 2015 Facebook group over the summer about a job as a videographer for admissions, I applied right away.  I was actually lucky enough to have a job within three days of moving in, and I have no complaints.  All my coworkers are really nice, I get to go to interesting places to film Learn More, See More, B'More, and I get to work on video projects by myself.  If you see a video on the Hopkins Video Blog youtube page or even the jhu.edu homepage, I probably helped to make it, which is super cool.

I am obsessed with my job at the Baltimore Museum of Art. I work in the curatorial department of American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, and it tends to be the best part of my day. Every day walking through the galleries to get to my office, I'm always reminded of why this is the area I want to pursue. I've been exposed to so much as far as what happens behind-the-scenes at a museum and work on small-scale projects for everything from grants to presentations. The online application that the Student Employment Services offers made it extremely easy to apply and I'm so happy to have the opportunity that I do in working at the BMA.
