Some people really like the library, but I kind of feel like a groundhog studying deep underground. What's your favorite study spot other than the library?

In AMR II, they have this great study room in the basement with tons of whiteboards. I also really like the Blue Jay Cafe.

It may not be the most efficient study spot, but I prefer to study at home.  If I'm just doing homework, I'll probably be sitting in my bed.  Sometimes, when I'm getting really serious about something, I'll actually move to my dining room table.  Of course, my desk has too many papers on it to actually be a useful surface.

In between classes or the day of an exam, I like to study in Levering, either downstairs in the food court (with food, of course) or upstairs in the cafe area.

My favorite spot to study, honestly, is my apartment because I like to be comfortable when I study and be able to make a cup of tea when I feel like it. But when I study during the day/on campus, I absolutely adore Gilman Hall. Both the Atrium and the HUT are such good places to study and the atmosphere with the natural light, and the couches, decorations etc make me enjoy studying there much more than the library.

McCoy has these really great study rooms on almost every floor, and they each have a big whiteboard and a table. It's really convenient because it is in my dorm, but it is still a place where I can focus. :)

Like Mandy, I have different study spots that very according to the degree of work I have. If I have serious work like a paper or an exam to study for, I usually force myself to go to the library-- being in a quiet setting and around other people who are studying helps me get in the mindset! If it's just a normal school day, sometimes I'll study in my floor's common room or at "the Hut" in Gilman Hall. During the day on weekends, I usually just lounge around in my room, and so I like to work at my desk!

I have two: HopStop {now called "Blue Jay Cafe" in Levering Hall, but I'm old so I can't stop calling it by its old name} and The Hut in Gilman.

When I was a freshman, The Hut was basically where my life happened: I conferenced with my humanities professors about assignments and exams, met my friends to talk about projects and share lunch over studying, and wrote some of my most intimidating {and best} college papers. It was so old and it felt that way - but it was good because I would think about all the people who had studied there before me and what successes they went on to achieve, and then I would get super inspired without fail.

When Gilman Hall closed for two years for serious renovations, I had to find other places to study. I studied in the lobby of Garland, in Nolans, on Q Level of the library, and of course my bed. But I adopted HopStop as my sort of Hut-replacement and can't seem to give it up now that the Hut is back. It's quiet but it's ok to talk, it gets a lot of light, and it has really comfy chairs. I also love that there is an old wood bar in the room where they actually used to serve alcohol to students who were of age. "The good ol' days," one alumnus told me one day when I walked him from Mason Hall to the Breezeway :P

You can tell one of my major criteria for a study spot is some sort of history: the atmosphere has to feel scholarly and official and old for some reason, to remind myself that what I'm doing is important and relevant. Call me a nerd but I love that feeling :D

yea i agree with you... I get a bit claustrophobic in the library especially below A level.. so whenever i go to MSE I only stay on M level..
but when I just feel like staying in charles commons, i just go down stairs in the first level and go to winter's library which is a small cozy place with sofas and tables. there's also a conference room in the building which is really quiet and awesome. if you ask me in person i'll tell you where it is ;)

I'm a fan of the Atrium in Gilman Hall - it's relaxed, well-lit, and (most importantly) has a coffee shop. It's also quiet, but not silent, which is nice for casual studying.

When I'm feeling more intense (e.g. midterms), I head on down to C-Level where I am at maximum efficiency.

My answer to this is pretty much the same as Keith's.  I really like Gilman Hall - it's really pretty and has a cafe right next to the atrium.  However, if I want to be more productive, I tend to get a lot done on C level of the library.

I often study on M level. The lower levels of the library are not nearly as enjoyable for me - way too quiet. The HUT is nice, too. My department also has a study room that I sometimes use.

This might sound strange...but sometimes I really like to study in the FFC. Having food available whenever I want it is nice when I'm writing a paper or reading.

When it's nice out, I like to bring my computer and notebooks to the beach!  For prospective students, "the beach" is the large plot of grass right behind the "Johns Hopkins University" sign on North Charles Street.  It's relaxing and, surprisingly, very quiet.

I really like to study in my room since I have a single and don't need to go to the library for peace and quite. It's nice, especially if you have your door open and see people walking around (but mostly for confirmation that you are NOT alone). I get a lot of work done on my own- without any distractions.

Hmm...I've actually been failing at the whole studying and being efficient thing so far this year...and it's been failing the most at the library (regardless of level)...I keep giving it chances but each time I go nothing gets done except for a woozy impromptu nap...so I'm still looking for spaces. The lib feels different from how it did freshman and sophomore year for me, for some odd reason.

I do like the Hut for between classes, and my dining room table (I failed at putting my desk together and I'm always too busy to try again) for the time being.

I just tried studying for about an hr in the big lecture hall in Hodson and I liked it a lot! It was between classes so it was me and that huge room alone for an hr. During finals, many students also find random rooms in Hodson in which they can study and have the blackboards, too.

To be honest, I love the library because there's a lot of flexibility based on what kind of work you're doing (M level for individual work that isn't too intense so you want company; A level for group work or serious time-wasting; B, C, and D levels if you have serious studying to do or a paper to write). I really like working in Pura Vida, the café in Levering Hall. And even though I don't live in Wolman, a lot of my friends do, and I really like working in the common areas they have on each floor.

I've actually never been to Gilman Hall--it was closed for construction the past two years, and opened while I was abroad. It sounds awesome though, and I'll be sure to check it out when I come back from Cape Town.

Usually I like to head way into the library (B or C) to write a paper, but for studying I'd rather be up on M level. Everyone complains about the library, but I'm in the University of Cape Town's library now (exam season here) and I can say I really do miss MSE.

Carma's Cafe on 32nd and St Paul's is a great place to study, and I usually do real work in my room. Last year, I really liked the common rooms in Charles Commons, or Pura Vida in Levering Hall, but it sounds like I'll have to check out Gilman when I get back!

I love studying in my floor's common room! Everyone is always out there studying, and you can bet that there's someone out there who is doing the same work It makes for great group studying, and even better group procrastination. : )

I do absolutely adore the library, though. I'm a big proponent of the merits of C level.

Am I the only one that not only has numerous favorite study spots but also specific study seats that I like? It really depends on what time of day it is/what my schedule is like and what I'm working on. This year here are my locations:

- School of Public Health: Now that I'm taking classes at the School of Public Health, I find that I'm productive before my 10:30 classes sitting on the 2nd floor of the building. Somehow surrounding myself with graduate students motivates me even in the AM.

- The Hut and M-Level: These two places are filled with good memories. Over the last year three years, these are the places where I've probably met many of friends or become closer with those that I already had. If it's not right before a test and I just need to get some work done, this is where I go (and I usually am able to find a friend of mine).

- C-Level (I know this discussion was for non-library locations but oh well): C-Level and I have not so good memories mainly because it's an obvious sign that I have something major coming up or feel like I've been unproductive. But whenever I'm stressed or need to bust out a paper, this is where I go and it usually never disappoints me. I tend to write my best papers at the library's desktop computers.

- Levering and Mason: Leverings my favorite place during those awkward times between classes or whatever else (mainly because I can multitask and also eat). I also enjoy Mason before any admissions-related activity that I have to do (mainly because it's super nice and there aren't many people around).

My room is definitely not my favorite place to study. However, now that I don't have internet in my room, if it's late and I'm stressed it's become a good study location.

I like the quiet study lounge in Levering...there are sofas, tables, and the bar set up from when it was the HopStop. I spent way to much time there last year doing mock trial, and became a habit to end up there last semester. It's also near several of my classes/extracurriculars, which makes it a good spot to stop off at before class/Tutorial.

I, like Jessica, am extremely particular about my specific seat choice. There is a particular carrel on B-Level in the library (actually the seat I am in right now) that I must must have when I study.

If I am not working here, which is very rare, I will curl up in my bed in Wolman under my nice down comforter. However, I must acknowledge that if I go there to "study," chances are it becomes a nap within fifteen minutes.
