Clean? Close? Calm?
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:54 PM »
Hi, my name is Haley and I just enrolled in JH as a BME student!  I've been reading through the forums but can't seem to find an answer to this question--which dorm is the cleanest?  The idea of cleaning bathrooms myself doesn't particularly thrill me (so communal is actually OK as long as they are cleaned... daily?), so I was wondering if the suites were ever cleaned by the staff or if Buildings A/B, Wolman, and McCoy have to always be cleaned by the students?

Also, is there a particular dorm that may be closer to where freshman students take their classes?  (I'm not sure if being in BME makes a difference.)  I don't mind walking a bit further to eat or to go to the gym, but when I accidentally sleep in for too long (which is BOUND to happen), would one of the dorm locations gives me a better chance of actually making it to class?

One last thing!  I definitely want a roommate, but I also don't need a dorm that's partying all the time or is generally loud and super social.  However, as long as I can get away from the noise when necessary (studying!) I think ruckus would be fine.  On the other hand, I still want to be able to make tons of new friends and don't want to be particularly isolated from people.

With these things in mind, any suggestions on which dorm would be the best fit for me?  Thanks so much for your time!

-Haley

Hi Hayley,

The bathrooms in the AMRs, the communal ones, are cleaned daily by staff.  Buildings A/B, Wolman, and McCoy all leave the bathroom cleaning responsibility up to you and your suite mates.

In terms of closness to classes, they are all within the same relative distance, although with Wolman and McCoy you have to cross Charles street as opposed to the AMRs and A/B where you are already on campus.  Overall, the difference in distance is only a few minutes, so in terms of time to class, its all about the same, so your mad dash to class after sleeping in is going to take more or less the same amount of time.

In terms of quiet time, its about the same in all the dorms.  If you have your door closed its not hard to sit and do work in quiet.  You don't have to be worried about isolation from anybody in any of the dorms, you'll always be able to make friends on your floor or in the area.  Plus, for studying, worse comes to worse, you can always head down to the library and do your work in absolute silence and distraction free.

If I were you, I'd choose the AMRs for a couple of reasons:

1. It seems that your main concern is cleanliness and the AMRs are cleaned daily by staff as Nick said. It's actually reeeally nice to have that. I'm from Wolman (cleaning responsibility is left up to you and your suitemates), but I basically live in the AMRs and I actually now prefer to take a shower in the AMRs. It's way cleaner. However, it depends on you and your suitemates - if you guys like to keep your space clean, then it shouldn't be a problem. But if you don't clean much, then it will get dirty pretty quick.
2. The AMRs are right next to the FFC (cafeteria), which is really nice if you prefer to get your food from the cafeteria (I would say that the food is pretty decent) but you can always get food from the mini grocery store Charles Market which is right next to McCoy and Wolman. So it depends on what you prefer.
3. The AMRs are the nearest to the gym (often known as rec center) - don't know if this makes a difference to you or not. Additionally, Wolman has a small workout room, but I like the atmosphere of the rec center better.
4. Depending on your floormates, the common rooms on your floor in Wolman can get rowdy or be busy all the time. If you have a roommate who's often in your room and may be a distraction, then that may be a problem. Either you can go to the library, which is right across the street from Wolman and McCoy, or, if you're in the AMRs (they do not have common rooms), you can work in the study rooms or the Blue Jay Cafe in the basement of AMR II or the big common room in AMR I - they're often quiet.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!  That helps a lot.  In terms of the dorms themselves though, is there one that is cleaner and maybe a bit newer/nicer?  (Perhaps there is one that is routinely infested with roaches? XD)

To my knowledge, none of the dorms have had problems like roach infestations or anything like that!! In terms of newness, Wolman is the newest. The AMRs are older.

I would definitely recommend checking out the Hopkins Cribs - they'll give you an idea of what the dorms and rooms look like!!

I have seen a roach before in the dorms, but it wasn't in someone's room, and it was in the basement. But, hearing from my sister, the fact that I only ever saw one was amazing, as she used to see them a lot in college (she went to another top school).

But yeah, Wolman/McCoy is newer I guess, but I personally loved the AMRs. Plus, let's be honest, cleaning your own bathroom is a horrid chore. Haha.

None of the dorms are super loud 24/7 so you do not really have to worry about. In terms of proximity to classes, they are all pretty close but the AMRs and buildings A/B are definitely the closest.

With regards to the cleanliness question, how clean you want your room to be is up to you. If you want to make sure you have a roommate who cleans daily, you can indicate that that is important to you on the housing survey you will receive in the mail. Ultimately, where you want to live should depend on whether you want to have suite-style living or not and some other factors. Cleanliness really varies from room to room, so it's up to you to keep your room clean.

Freshman yr is always crazy. As the RA of the loudest house in AMR 2 (sometimes it just works out that way) I can say that all houses are not like t hat.  Depends on the personality of the dorm itself. Some AMR houses are eerily quiet. As far as cleanliness, when I do room checks some of my residents' rooms are super clean (girls AND guys) and some are just gross haha...so yea as been said, it always depends.

The AMRs are the oldest dorms but honestly they aren't like broken down or anything. Newer freshman dorms would be Wolman (they are renovating them and adding a movie theater and new kitchen as week speak, er type) but they are all actually nice and kept up.

Besides, this is what I always tell freshmen worried about this--no matter where you are this year, your soph yr will be an upgrade. And the less "nice" your freshman dorm is, the more you'll appreciate what you have soph. yr.

However, if you're really concerned about noise (like I was...I actually hate noise a lot), then I'd go for the buildings. That's where I lived.

Dominique is SO right- no matter where you live you will always upgrade sophomore year! I lived in AMR 1 Royce House last year and really liked it! I live in McCoy this year, which I was a little skeptical about because I wanted to live in Charles Commons, but I actually love my room!
