in that same class, i learned that the ancient romans would put lead into their wine to  make it taste sweeter, because lead has a sweet taste (which is why many kids lick the walls in their homes if the paint was lead paint). this gave them widespread problems with dementia and some people think this was a huge cause of the fall of the roman empire-how interesting!

Harvard has 11 days for its reading period, and we have 3. http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2006/5/18/constructing-the-period-much-like-waffles/

Reading period=time after the end of semester classes designated solely for studying--then exams start after this time.

Is that crazy or what?

Technically, this wasn't today, it was over the weekend, but I learned that with the help of massive amounts of caffeine, my body is capable of staying awake for over 2 straight days and still being functional.

The other day I learned, as I do at the end of each semester, the satisfaction of getting all my grades back and being able to check off another set of classes.

Quote from: "JHU_Dominique"
i also learned that i have a really amazing physics textbook
Is this the point where I return the favor and let you know that was extraordinarily nerdy? Haha! JK!

HAHA touche Brian, touche...I had to give it a shoutout because we had to teach ourselves with it lol and I am glad it was so good because otherwise I'd done...I mean my grade wasn't great but could have been worse if my handy dandy textbook was worse :P

Today I learned that Hopkins Grad Students (who you would think would be ridiculously smart), are not as smart as the undergrads! This was posted by my Nervous System professor on Blackboard today:

"So I teach 1st year graduate students about the visual system - did so in January - and when time came for me to ask questions for the first exam I reused one from this past semester's Nervous System I.  You should know the performance of grad students on that question was a standard deviation lower than your own performance last semester.  I will keep quiet about that among the grad students and the other faculty but I thought you folks should know about it.  Go and perform just as well on Tuesday's exam."

Today while I was working in the lab I read that there's a gene in fruit flies called Glial Lazarillo.  I Googled the name origin since I thought it was a weird coincidence that we read a novel called "La Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes" in my Spanish lit class last semester, and apparently the person who discovered the gene named it after the main character in that play, Lazarillo!  In the novel, Lazarillo makes a living by guiding a blind man, and the Lazarillo gene encodes a protein that guides axon growth!  I'm way too excited about this - I never thought taking Spanish lit classes would actually apply to bio.

And in Epidemiology I learned that accidents and injuries are the leading cause of death in Americans under 44.

55 Americans under 21 die from injuries every day, and if you carry that out over the year its 15767, or 119 fully loaded planes. Be careful! Wear your helmets!

I learned that theres a thing called the "Big Mac Index", used as a way of measuring a countries economy.  Since the Big Mac is sold in pretty much every country on earth, is the exact same thing everywhere, and its sales are recorded in a trustworthy manner, the price/sales figures of a Big Mac in different countries can tell you a lot about that place!

I learned from one of my chem lab students thattttttttt the word purple was created by the Crayola factory solely for the purpose of naming their "violet" crayon a funny sounding color......was I the only one who didn't know that?????

Also in Epidemiology yesterday I learned that there is not really a specific scientific term for what we call a "heart attack." The lecturer said that the closest term to it is 'myocardial infarction'.' Sorry if I sound lame to you doctors to be, but that was news to me LOL.

I didn't know the purple thing either, but thats pretty cool!

Also...I was under the impression that a myocardial infarction was a heart attack...that the two are synonymous.  Its basically when a section of your heart stops and that section starts to die off, I think that heart attack might just be a more general term for the heart not working and an MI is specific to when just a section stops?  IDK though, we aren't taught that in computer science classes :/

And today I learned how to make an encryption in such a way that the process of encrypting does not reveal how to decrypt the message...in other words, if person A wants to receive a secret message from person B and person C is trying to intercept that message, A can make an encryption method where B and C can both encrypt it but only A can get it back to English.

Ahhhh I learned about that when I did a project on cryptography in AP Calc; that's super cool! :)

Today, I learned that in 2006, 7.4 billion lbs of chocolate were consumed! Also, Hershey didn't know anything about chocolate processing when he began Hershey's chocolate; he just experimented for months to ensure that he would get ahead of the competition. Also, there is a really fierce competition between Mars and Hershey; if you call Mars, they won't give you any information about how they process the chocolate or about their president!

I'm writing my Con Law paper about the Supreme Court decision in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle, which deals with whether school districts can use racial classifications in determining school assignments as part of a voluntary integration program. During my research, I'm learning a lot about how segregated American communities and schools are - here are a few statistics that shocked me:

-Over half of school districts are over 90% minority or over 90% white
-75% of minority majority schools are high poverty schools
-Out of the top 50 metropolises in America, none are considered by sociologists to be integrated, and 33 of those are extremely segregated
-One in six black students attends a school that is 99-100% minority

Today at JHU I learned that you should definitely bring more than one suitcase to pack up all of your stuff for winter break, especially if you're staying home for intersession.

I also learned that if you are able to somehow fit all of your stuff in one suitcase, it is going to weigh a lot more than 50 lbs. Good thing I also learned that Continental Airlines sells large duffel bags for $30 at their check-in counter just for those crazy college kids that think they can take everything home with them!

Today I learned that Hopkins is the kind of school that I actually really want to spend hours talking about on the forums! I guess I just have that many nice things I want to say about it

Also, considering that I accidentally forgot to attach my paper to the e-mail that I sent yesterday to my French professor, and then got the NICEST e-mail back quietly stating that she never got the paper and if I could please attach it that would be great, professors here are really pretty wonderful.

Today, I learned that you can make a logically-true conditional argument even with a ridiculous, false premise.

For example, "If the moon is made of cheese then I will ace my math exam" is a true statement regardless of whether or not I actually do ace my math exam.

The statement "If socks like to eat bacon then alpacas are made out of steel" is true and would also be even if alpacas were actually made of steel.
Formal logic is crazy!
