^^ Haha

I learned that there are 774 cars per 1000 people in the US, compared to 8 cars per 1000 people in Uganda, which also has a 6.8% HIV rate compared to the U.S.'s .6%. And while the U'S's problem is slighty too many old people, in Uganda 50% of the population is under 15 yrs old!

I'm learning how to write a grant proposal!  Nevermind the fact that I don't have much confidence in it.  Learning experience though, right? :)

I learned that if you're a Center for Social Concern (CSC) group that wants to reserve a CSC van to go on volunteer trips, there's a new procedure for van reservation that's different from previous years' van reservation policies.

I learned that Hopkins Med School was the first Medical School to admit women--because four women--Elizabeth King, Mamie Gwinn, M. Carey Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Garrett helped provide the school with sufficient endowment funds--on the conditions that it would be a graduate medical school with the highest admissions standards in the country and that it admit women.

I learned that the incarceration rate of the United States is the greatest in the industrialized world.  We are also the only industrialized "1st world" country that still has the death penalty.

I also learned that French people respond much more modestly to compliments than Americans do (according to my professor who grew up in France).

I learned that actually working on a paper earlier than a day before it's due is really helpful.  I have a History of Art paper due tomorrow but I already have half of it done after two good library sessions last week ... and I feel no stress at all!  It may be the first time I've ever done a paper in advance!

I learned that if you need to memorize something short (for example, an composition for my Portuguese class), then it's best to do it right when you get up rather than at 3 am the night before.

Today, I learned that setting off the motion-sensitive lights in the rows of books in the library becomes infinitely more fun with a 10 year old who is enraptured by this phenomenon. I took my tutee to the MSE library today and he couldn't resist running up and down the rows turning on the lights.

I also learned that people on D level are much more receptive to 10 year old making noise than they are to regular students!

I learned that positive psychology actually works!

One of the groups i'm in (active minds) had a talk from one of the professors here, who teaches a positive psychology course, and by the end of the talk on positive psychology, and the discussion afterwards i actually felt in a much better mood!

Oh Tabitha!  Professor Piferi is an amazing woman!  I am currently in her Introduction to Personality Theory course, and she was raving about the Positive Psychology course.  I wish I had more time as an undergraduate to take that course -- I totally believe in positive psychology!

Anyway, today I learned that homeless women in Baltimore are absolutely amazing women.  Okay, I guess that has been the theme of my semester as I have been taking a course called "Health & Homelessness" which has an interactive practicum component.  So for 12 hours+ this semester, I spent time getting to know two of the ladies at Sarah's Hope on Mount Street (through St. Vincent de Paul).

I learned that Provost Kristina Johnson has been nominated by U.S. President Obama to be the Under Secretary of Energy! It's now up to the Senate to confirm his nomination.

Provost Johnson just came to Hopkins from Duke at the start of the previous school year--so if she will become the Under Secretary of Energy, that will mean Hopkins will have changed provosts twice in less than two years. (The provost before Provost Johnson, Provost Steven Knapp, left Hopkins to become the president of George Washington University in August 2007.) Now I think that's a lot of changes for a short span of time, but they're both "good news" changes--who wouldn't be proud that your university's provost has been selected to move on to bigger and better things? :)

Congrats to Provost Johnson! :D

In Intro Pub Health we learned how insurance companies would rather pay for a 30,000 dollar foot amputation for a diabetic than pay for him/her to go to the podiatrist for preventative care. Why? Because they make more money off of the surgery.  :/ It is SO HORRIBLE how insurance companies are businesses that don't care about what is best for their customers.

Because if they started covering things like the podiatrist, then they'd attract more and more sick customers when in fact they want healthy customers that pay tons for insurance but never use that money...

This 90 degree weather in April is weird and not that typical....lol I will take it tho over the 45 we had 2 weeks ago haha

I learned that my chem professor (if you all come here and take intro. chem, if you have Dr. Poland as an option TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ) is very very very understanding...I kinda have test anxiety that didn't hit hard until this sem...go figure grades count now...what can you do? ANywho he agreed to give me extra time to take the exam which is something you usually have to get permission for thru the Disability office.

I learned that C level is amazing!!!! I dunno why I never went there!

Oh yea one more thing...as I study for my final chem midterm, I have seen how valuable group studying can be! I know we say it here on the boards a lot but I'm a loner when it comes to studying usually; however, this time I sat down with a friend and we went through the notes page by page and since she's a genius :P I learned SO much doing this. Try it! c:)

Also, I learnt that the bookstore has a poor supply of hair gel.

I learned that acting can be taught. John Astin (of Addams Family fame) told us in class today that he has been experimenting with teaching acting and has discovered that you don't need raw talent to be an actor, it helps but is not imperative. His class has been so much fun because we really get personalized attention and a chance to improve our acting skills.

Today I (once again) learned how cool Professor Beveridge is in my Americans and their Environment class. For the last week of class, he is doing an in-class, student-led review. We each get one week of class material to summarize in a few minutes. But in addition, he asks us to criticize the reading he assigned and how he led the class that week. It is really good for both us and him!

Also he knows the lawyer from the Erin Brockovich movie!

I looooove taro bubble tea! It's also my favorite flavor. :) I actually will have to say I like the tapioca pearls at Orient Express on St. Paul Street much better, since they're chewier and slightly sweeter. However, I like the way that Silk Road has a lot more bubble tea flavors (and the way that Silk Road is cleaner than Orient Express).

I learned that next semester, I will narrow down my classes by the amount of finals I have and papers I will need to write....I'm still stuck at school because I had 4 finals and a paper, which is not cool considering most of the freshman class has left :(  (or at least it seems that way) So it's kinda hard to focus when you're so close but so far to go home!

Today I learned that it is absolutely critical to bring a sweatshirt to Hodson 110, espcially if you have four hours of classes there.

While in the icebox, I learned that caffeine is nearly as toxic as DDT... then promptly manipulated this fact to say that DDT is nearly as benign as caffeine, thus justifying my coffee addiction (I may or may not be drinking coffee as we speak).

Think it rains a lot in Seattle?

I learned in my Water Resources class that while the Pacific Northwest does get a lot of rain compared to other spots in the US (about 90"/year) - it's nothing compared to the 900" that a certain region in India sees each year.

Apparently, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall had an interesting sense of humor.

When he got into disagreements with then-Chief Justice Warren Burger, Marshall referred to him as "chiefy baby," which supposedly enraged the Chief Justice, who was reportedly very proper and impossibly well-spoken.

He also liked to play little pranks, including successfully posing as an elevator operator in the supreme court building.
