Where is the best place to go for a cup of coffee in the morning?  I was hoping to find something relatively cheap (so I don't have to go to Starbucks every day).  Does the fresh food cafe have coffee?  I know that it is all-you-can-eat, but are you allowed to bring a thermos or something and grab a cup of coffee to go with a breakfast?

How much does an average-sized cup of coffee cost on campus?  I'm just trying to get an idea of budget/spending money so there won't be any surprises.  Thanks!

For a fast, convenient cup of coffee, I'd say either hit Einstein's {which is located in the first floor of Wolman .. probably more convenient for someone who lives IN Wolman though} or Cafe Q, which is on the highest level of the library.  Starbucks is great and there are two locations close to campus {one in Barnes and Noble, the other about a block down St. Paul Street} but it can get pricey sometimes, so these are good alternatives!  I usually go to Cafe Q most often so I know their rates a little better: a small cup of drip coffee is just a dollar and, when you want your drinks to get fancier {if you decide on cappuccino, mocha, latte, etc.} or bigger, it goes up from there.

You can use your Dining Dollars at Einstein's and you can use JCash at Cafe Q {just hand over your JCard!}, so it makes for a really easy, fast option for mornings when you may not be all that awake.  Cafe Q also has punch cards if you go there regularly -- the one I use gives you a free mocha/latte/whatever after you've bought 10.

Also, if you live in Wolman {not sure what the policy is in the AMRs/Buildings A & B} and drink coffee every morning, it might be smart to talk to your suitemates and see if anyone would want to chip in for a coffee machine.  That way, you could buy the grinds and even those portable cardboard cups and make it yourself every morning .. that'd cut down on costs for sure.  :)

FFC does have coffee, as well.  They never said anything to me when I'd take a thermos in there, but they might start cracking down because a lot of people were taking a lot of food out last year (not in thermoses, just in general).  I think you'd probably be fine in the morning though.  It's not the best coffee in the world, as you might imagine, but it's not too bad.

And to add to what Lauren said, even if your suitemates don't want to share the cost of a coffeemaker, just keep checking every week with target, bed bath & beyond, walmart, etc. to see what their specials are.  I got a $70 coffee maker for $20 at target last summer during a weekly promotion.

In the AMRs they aren't allowed, but my friends had one and just hid it during room checks.

Another really good place on campus to get coffee that wasn't mentioned is Pura Vida which is a fair trade coffee house in Levering Hall with really good coffee.

Best place for coffee?!  Obviously CARMA'S!!

Carma's is this amazing little place on 32nd Street (about 2/3 blocks from freshman dorms).  You kind of have to look for it since it's down a little flight of stairs from the sidewalk but when it's nice out they have tables outside.  It's a great place to go for breakfast on the weekends or go with a friend (or even alone) and get some reading done for class.  It is owned and operated by Carma herself, she's great and the food is amazing as well.  If you go, get the yogurt with granola--it's the best stuff ever.  I am considering a way to get it shipped to me after I graduate! haha if only that were possible!

One World Cafe has really good coffee, fresh juices, and all sorts of stuff like that.  I'd think if you live in AMR or A/B it would be closer than starbucks (it's across from the gym/homewood field)

So, I'm somewhat addicted to coffee, so let me give you a rundown.

On Campus:

      On the Dining Plan:
In Fresh Food Cafe: They have drip coffee. If you bring a thermos you can definitely take your coffee to class. However, to be honest, the coffee's just not that great. So it's free but that's something you battle with.

Einsteins/Super-Depot (The food place in Wolman) also has (I think only) drip; but I haven't had it since Freshman year so I can't be counted on to tell you the quality.

Pura Vida (In Levering): Has Drip as well as espresso. You can get this with dining dollars, which is convenient. They also have a selection of snacks... The coffee is so-so, but definitely the best option for coffee that's on the dining plan.

On Campus but not on the dining Plan:

Cafe Q. Located in the library: convenient, good coffee, long lines btwn classes. I think cafe q is the best on campus choice for quality. Espresso & Drip. The only toss-up is the espresso really varies based on who is making your coffee... ah well.

Assorted coffee stands are also available throughout campus, one is in Bloomberg and one was in Gilman but I am not sure what will happen to that one what with the remodeling of Gilman this year.....

Off Campus:

Barnes & Noble Starbucks: Normal starbucks selection, convenient because it's in the bookstore, so it's kind of on campus. In the Charles Commons Building.

Starbucks on St Paul: Normal starbucks, however it is unfortunate that they didn't set their store up well b/c there are no really good places for studying.

Carma's (as mentioned by Julia): has a great coffee (espresso/drip) and also great food. Unfortunately Carma's is teensy, so camping out there for work isn't much of an option, unless its nice outside.

One World Cafe: Located on University. Has espresso/drip and also a bunch of delicious veggie food =) YUM. The coffee is kind of hit or miss though... the drip is good so if you like that it might be best to rely on.

Okay those are the main coffee places, you can also find coffee at Donna's, Paper Moon and possibly along Charles depending on which places are open... (this changes frequently, oddly enough)

Okay goodluck! Get your caffeine!

Einstein's is definitley the quickest.

Pura Vida you can use dining dollars, but i'ts not amazing.

Cafe Q, I find to be overrated/they make a specific type of coffee that I find to be heavy.  I really can't say what it is, but nevertheless it's the closest you will get to a Starbucks type/lots of fun drinks on campus.  Also, they have gelato!

Other than my opinions on those places, Laura pretty much covered all the other options.  My favorite is Starbucks, but the Starbucks in Barnes and Nobles is great for studying purposes.  They have lot's of room.

As others have said, Einstein and Pura Vida seem to be popular because they accept dining dollars and are on campus.  I'm not sure how much a cup would cost - probably less than $2 for drip coffee.  Cafe Q is also popular because it's in the library, but I think it's a little bit more pricey.  I've been trying to make my own coffee - use the microwave to heat up water and use instant coffee, milk, and sweetner.  It's great because I save a *ton* of money since it's about $2 a day (and this can add up throughout the semester especially since I tend to drink more than one cup of coffee a day).

But if you're going to make your own coffee, you should invest in a coffee pot or at least a french press (super easy; makes delicous coffee, you just need a method of heating up the water....) and then not have (shudder) instant coffee (shudder)..

Don't worry one little bit about that.  Being my roommate this year will mean that you'll be around lots and lots and lots of coffee .. you'll be a convert in no time! :P

I have been on this Earth for 33 years and I still have yet to have a cup of coffee or any coffee-like beverage. In fact, I have never even had a sip and I did go to college and have worked on a college campus for 11+ years.

So mainly, I drink coffee/tea, and I get the teabags from FFC (oh no!), and they do have coffee as well, though its not the best. As for places, Starbucks is a tad overpriced (where's Dunkin Donuts!), but Pura Vida is where I usually go (I have classes in Hodson, and its right around the corner.) Oh, and Cafe Q is another good spot to go to as well. One of my friends works there, and its really good quality coffee.

I absolutely don't drink coffee...

my mom told me when I was a kid that if I drank coffee I'd never grow up and I'd have dark skin....except I'm STILL short and I'd LOVE to be able to drink a tan...

plus I'm already 10x as excitable as I need to be, I don't think caffeine even does anything for me!

WHOA!  My parents gave my brother and I these little teeny cups of coffee when we were really young because we loved it.  We had these little bitty coffee mugs that I'd probably down in a sip or two now.  In retrospect, they may have been sized for espresso shots.  Anyway, I don't know how you've made it 33 years without any coffee EVER.  Now that I'm back on campus, I'm going on about 2-3 cups per day.

Also, to add to the actual conversation about getting coffee, if you can brew coffee, Zeke's is a local company that makes outstanding coffee.  They sell it at the Waverly farmer's market on Saturdays and at Eddie's Market on St. Paul Street.

Impressed with daniel's lack of coffee tasting. I just wanted to hijack this thread and say that CHAI LATTES are much better than coffee! And why doesn't coffee ever give me energy like it does for you all?????? If I could just add caffeine in chai lattes then that would be great.

Domonique and Mandy - chai does have caffeine!

We did an experiment where we extracted caffeine and we used tea as the source for it, so when you drink tea you are getting caffeine! It is just not as concentrated as in coffee.

I'm actually trying to cut back on the coffee consumption right now since I've been a little bit of a caffeine addict all year, and my favorite place to go for tea around campus is Chocolate Tea.  It's about two blocks off campus - right next to One World and behind the Collonade.  It has a huge selection of teas and good sandwiches too.
