First Day At Hopkins

I was on Pre-O, so I remember getting up, packing up camp, and sitting on a bus for about five hours. Once I got out of the bus (around 3), we cleaned and collected our gear. I found my parents and we went to go get checked in and see the dorm. My parents had already unpacked since the very nice Hopkins move-in staff bring all the stuff up to the room and my parents had been waiting for a while. We went out to dinner and I came back and met everyone on my hall. I then met everyone in my house. Like Nick said, there was a whirlwind of names. I also remember going to Playfair, which was a very interesting experience, but that's all I'll say. :)

One of my favorite things about my first day here was how NOT stressful it was. I had heard horror stories from my friends' siblings at different universities, trying to carry all their bags and boxes up seven flights of stairs etc. etc.

If you come to Hopkins - you won't have to even lift your backpack. I remember pulling up to Wolman in my giant suburban stuffed to the brim with boxes (I tend to overpack), only to have a current Hopkins student whisk me away to get my orientation packet, while a team of strong upperclassman unloaded my car and took every single box up to my room for me.

From the very moment you arrive on campus, you really feel that the administration is there to take care of you, and help guide you through what can be a very nerve-racking process. I knew from the very first day that I had made the right decision to come here.

My first day was crazy but great. It was strange living in the US for the first time in my life, but the move-in was quick and painless. We had a meeting with our house and my RA and floormates seemed great. I met so many new people on the first day that I had forgotten all of their names by the next morning. I also remember feeling really lucky to have a roommate that seemed so great, and being really excited for everything that orientation was going to bring.

I remember getting up at 6am, leaving our hotel in Towson at 7am, stopping for Starbucks along the way, and getting to campus around 7:30am. I was so jittery from my nerves and probably all the coffee that I could not sit still as we waited in our rental car for the students to start letting people onto campus (I'm not so proud to point out that we were the very first car in line). Once we finally pulled up to AMR II, I found my single on the third floor, along with all of my boxes stacked up next to it. Realizing how small my room actually was, I remember going into a sort of panic as I did not think there was any possible way that all of my stuff could fit into this room (but it did eventually!) After unpacking for a couple of hours and meeting a lot of the people in my hall, my parents and I went to lunch at the Ruby Tuesday's right next to campus, and then we went to target to do some grocery shopping and last-minute dorm supplies. Then I had a tennis meeting where we met everyone on the team and filled out a bunch of NCAA forms, and then I went to a Peer Ambassador meeting later that night! (During orientation week at Hopkins, there are a bunch of peer ambassador meetings in which you are assigned to a group of other incoming freshman and a pa leader who's usually a sophomore) The rest of my orientation week was a blur of residential advisor meetings, team meetings, and a ton of introductions and exchanging of numbers. I'd say by the third week of school things started to calm down, but orientation week is definitely the time to meet people and have a ton of fun before classes start to get more intense!

To be honest, I don't really remember my first day of classes at Hopkins. Even though it was only a few months ago, I just remember it being a blur of syllabi, new faces, and introductions.

I do, however, remember my first day ever at Hopkins. My parents and I left Virginia in the morning and arrived in Baltimore a few hours later. We pulled up into the line of cars, and I met a sophomore named Alexa who took me to get my J-Card, keys, and Orientation packets while other volunteers started unloading our van. After finally getting to my room in Wolman, I met my suitemates and walked around my floor and introduced myself to some of my floormates who were already there. My mom came up after parking and the Parent's Reception and helped me completely rearrange the furniture setup in my room! (The way everything had been set up left me literally no room to walk or even open my closet door--my roommate and I unfortunately got one of the smallest rooms on our floor) After spending the day unpacking and meeting everyone at our first official floor meeting, I went to dinner with my mom at Niwana (a Japanese restaurant across from Commons) before she left to drive back.

Overall, I felt a little nervous but, even more than that, I remember being excited. Since all of my friends from home had already left to go to school, by the time Move-In Day came, I was more than ready to start the semester. And even though many of my upperclassmen friends told me that I wouldn't stay friends with the very first people I met, some of my closest friends now are the ones that I met on my floor on the first or second day.
All the best,

Like JHU_Ruthie, I don't remember my first day of classes, but I remember move-in day.  I was on a Pre-Orientation trip, (Canoeing and Backpacking) and got to ride down a rapid that morning, then arrived back at campus, cleaned up the group gear, then headed off to my dorm.  My parents' flight was delayed getting in, (and wouldn't arrive until much later that night) so I took a shower, got back to my room, and met my roommate Kathleen holding a box of cookies.  Naturally, this cemented our friendship.  Then from two doors down this kid named Kevin (hereafter known as JHU_Kevin) comes by and complements her on the cookies, and we talk and find out that we were both summer blogging contest winners and we were both applying to SAAB.  My parents finally arrived, took me to pick up some last-minute things, and then we went out to Red Robin, which was amazing because I hadn't had anything but trail food for the past week.  The interesting thing about my first day at Hopkins was that it led to my parents being stranded in Baltimore for an extra week due to Hurricane Irene, though as someone from a desert I'm forced to admit that the hurricane was not as scary/interesting as I thought it would be.  An upperclassman adviser of my roommate told her to get some non-perishable food in case the power went out, so our fridge was packed with pudding the first week of school.  No other non-perishable food.  Just pudding.

My first day at Hopkins was so anxiety-ridden and rewarding. I had signed up to do multi-element pre-orientation, and was not sure what I was getting into. Getting out of the car in front of the Rec Center with my large camping backpack and t-shirt and shorts, I was nervous to look like a fool in front of people who could become my best friends. (Not to mention the fact that I was leaving my mom, which required a great level of self restraint to keep from crying.) I walked out back to a bunch of people sitting separately on tarps, and met my group of 7 others (I was the last to arrive). There were 3 other girls and 4 guys, and within 10 minutes I had become friends with a blonde named Lexi. Soon our group was on the bus and off to Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania where we spent the next 7 days not-showering and becoming amazing friends.
My first day was scary, but doing pre-o was one of the best choices I have ever made. 6 of the 8 members of our group are great friends and see each other every day, and I still say hi and am friends with the other 2 members. Lexi is also my best friend at Hopkins. If you have the opportunity to do pre-o, DO IT! You will not regret it. You come into Hopkins that first week with a group of friends you know will support you, and it makes the rest of the experience a lot less stressful.

I have a notoriously awful memory (the last meal I can remember eating was two nights ago's dinner, a REALLY nice colonial restaurant on the drive back from Maryland to CT - after that it's a total blur) so remembering my first day is going to be tough. In fact in terms of actual events, here goes -

Drive down, parents repeating over and over how much they are going to miss me.
Get there, organized line of cars.
Drive forward, a bunch of really nice people wearing green shirts help me out of the car and smile a lot and welcome me to Hopkins!
More green shirt people take a group of freshmen to get keys and check in and whatever. My roommate is actually in my little group! Nice surprise, he seems great.
Get my key, walk into my room, all my boxes of stuff are already there -- how in God's name did that happen? Instantly impressed.
Unpack a bit. Other people show up, I introduce myself - I have a really friendly house. One girl actually offers me a cookie... We're still best friends.
I meet my RA, Kiara. She seems nice. As it turns out, she really is! Over the semester she's been so helpful, really nice, and always up for a chat.
BLURRRR
I may have gone to some mixers and orientation events, but I have no idea which. I just remember that there were about a gazillion, and I forced myself to as many as I could.
BLURRRR
Sleep.

But in terms of feelings I remember, I felt happy, welcome, excited, nervous, reassured, impressed, and ready to get started!

Like everyone else, my first day was kind of a blur. I remember a ton of people in green shirts directing me to AMR II where I was to pick up a bunch of necessary stuff like my J-Card (ID card), room keys, and a Hopkins water bottle. But the one thing I remember very clearly on move-in day was opening my mailbox! My mailbox is located in AMR II and in order to open it, you need a combination to the lock. I know most high schools have lockers, but I haven't had a locker since middle school, so naturally I had a LOT of trouble opening my mailbox (it literally took me a good fifteen tries to open it)! Luckily, you share a mailbox with your roommate, so whenever I need to get the mail, I just make my roommate get it since she is far more skilled in the art of opening mailboxes than I am. But overall, move-in day was very fun! I felt at home right away, meeting and getting along with nearly everyone on my floor! I also met my awesome Building A RA's who make us cookies and brownies every now and then!

I was so excited for my first day of class. I set ten different alarms to make sure I didn't wake up late and made it on time to my first class. The first week is very relaxed and professors essentially tell you about course expectations and logistics (not too different from high school). All of the professors I've had have been very personable and they all encourage students to come by during office hours. There is a lengthy "shopping period" for classes so by the time you are all settled in your semester's classes you may have switched them around twenty times until you pick the schedule that is just right.

Despite my nerves, my first day at Hopkins was a lot of fun! I had been rock climbing for a week on Pre-Orientation, so after driving back to campus, finally getting my cell phone back which was flooded with texts (jokes...) and organizing all of our gear, our Pre-O leaders walked us to our dorm where I saw my teary-eyed parents. All of my luggage was already in my room so I settled in, met my roommate, and took a shower for the first time in a week (because of Pre-O, not because I don't understand social norms of hygiene, I promise). After moving everything from where my mom thought things should be to where I thought they should be, we got lunch at Chipotle and then I hung around with my roommate and we went to an ice cream social. That night my parents treated me to crabs for dinner in the Inner Harbor, and then I went out with my Pre-O group to some of the parties around campus. It was crazy to actually be at college but there was a lot to do and it was a great way to start my time at Hopkins.

Since I took classes during the summer immediately prior to my freshman year at Hopkins, my first day was quite a bit sooner than that of most of my classmates.

I arrived in Baltimore with no idea how to get to Hopkins from BWI. I managed to find a cab driver that would take me for very little money. He said that his daughter was starting college soon and that he “appreciated the plight of the young undergrad”. Thankful, I got in. We ended up taking what I determined later was the single most convoluted route ever. It was a good time, though. He talked about how kids grow up too fast and about how his daughter was so much smarter than he was. Proud father that he was, he showed me a picture from her graduation and almost teared up. The way that he approached it was funny, he said, “Let me show you a picture from her graduation. Oh, well, wait. Maybe when we stop at the next red light.” I laughed and responded, “Yeah, that’d be good!”

Having arrived behind the AMRs and removed my three bags from the cab, my new friend and I bid each other adieu went our separate ways; he, back to work and likely then to spend some time with his beloved daughter, and I, on to Hopkins and a new life at Homewood.
