Most Helpful Conversation You've Had at JHU

I had a really good text (lol doesn't anyone call people anymore?!) conversation with one of my best friends here, and it really helped me think about what I wanted to do after graduation. :'( Sometimes you just have those friends who have so thoroughly researched grad schools and their respective programs, so that's what we were talking about. I learned more about what was out there at the Bloomberg school of Public Health and how there were new Master's and certificate programs...I was forced to think more about the kind of career I may be interested in and about the degrees I could use to get there.

So, what is a helpful conversation you've had here thus far? :)

I wouldn't say it was one single conversation, but each day I learn a bit more about everything from what to do after graduation to what kinds of classes are best to take.  Its all the little bits and pieces that combine into the most helpful conversation I've had at JHU.  Each little bit helps, well, a little bit more and helps to make the minor adjustments in my path through Hopkins and life.

I would definitely agree with what Nick said, every conversation I have here helps me out a lot, but the most helpful conversation I've had was probably the one I had with Admissions_Mark when I was a junior in high school and wasn't entirely sure where I wanted to go to college. I had so many questions that I wanted to ask and Mark had answers for all of them, and by the time I left Mason Hall that day I knew Hopkins was my first choice. That's actually one of the reasons I decided to work in Admissions, so I can answer people's questions since I know how stressful the college application/decision process can be.

A couple of weeks toward the end of fall semester I was really frustrated with one of my science classes.  My Spanish professor asked if something was wrong because I looked tired/hadn't said much in class lately, and when I told him how I was just a little stressed out by this biology class he was very reassuring and told me to never feel locked into being a biology major.  He said that he started college as an engineer but ended up getting a PhD in Romance Languages and became a professor.  I love bio and have no intention of switching out of it, but it was cool hearing how this professor could relate to my situation, and I really appreciated his concern.

Like Nick and Joe, I wouldn't say it's one conversation, but I really like the discussions in my french classes. It's cool to think about abstract things like happiness, work, and art- it puts an interesting perspective on things definitely. I think the best part of it is that I realize that I'm talking in French. These conversations have help improve my french and helped me think about things in a new light. It's really cool to come out of a class and feel like the discussions you had were really worthwhile- and I've had that in all of my humanities classes so far.

I'm actually really glad that this thread happened because it's a story I never get tired of telling.

Last summer, I was having somewhat of a quarter-life crisis; I had been pre-med since before I even came to Hopkins, but I was losing steam. I was finding the science courses uninteresting and my clinical experiences were a mixed bag. I was concerned that I had made the wrong choice but worried about what would happen if I changed my mind.

While talking to my friend Ben, a co-RA for the Summer University program, I brought up some of these concerns. When he asked why I wanted to be a doctor, I told him that one of the reasons was that I have had so many horrible doctors in the past that I wanted to give back and really be a great doctor; I thought it was the only way I could make a difference in the community.

Ben, in all his profound wisdom, quoted a man by the name of Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Of course, Ben messed up the quote horribly, but the meaning was not lost in translation.

It may sound corny, but it's the truth. There's no use being miserable doing something you think the world needs, because the LAST thing the world needs is another miserable person. Today, I am very happily pursuing the things that I really care about and that really interest me. The thing about Hopkins is that we're all so motivated, driven, and goal-oriented that we forget to evaluate what we want the outcome to be. Fortunately, though, Hopkins is full of people who are happy with the journey itself. It may sound strange, but I can say with complete certainty that I don't think I would have had this epiphany anywhere else.

I have awesome conversations with my roommate and close friends every day. Hopkins is a really unique experience and only the people you meet here really understand what the classes are like, what the social scene is like, and how the experience is as a whole. Whenever I need advice about anything from what courses are interesting, to how I could better structure an essay, to what kind of medicine to take when I'm feeling sick, my friends here at Hopkins are the best and are always there for me!

So basically, as mushy as it sounds, all of my conversations with my Hopkins friends are meaningful and I learn new things from them every day...

I would definitely have to agree with everyone above in that I learn new things from people everyday here. I think the most helpful one I've had so far happened during my organic chemistry lab professor's (Dr. Jane Greco) office hours. I was the only one there and she and I had the chance to discuss our interests in chemistry and she told me about her career, her successes and her regrets.

Through talking to her I was able to realize that biology was not the right major for me, and later decided to switch to materials science & engineering with a focus in biomaterials.  One of the specific items we discussed was how unmathematical a biology major is, and how knowing advanced math helped her a lot in her pursuit of chemistry. I am really grateful I had this opportunity to get to know one of my professors!

Yesterday I was going to a thesis presentation at MICA with my Museums and Society professor and expressed my unwarrantedly doubtful outlook on the future as I look to pursue museum careers. In addition to reminding me that I'm just a freshman and should just genuinely enjoy my time at Hopkins, she listed off a number of contacts and opportunities to pursue around Baltimore and with Hopkins alums around the country, all which made me feel a lot more optimistic about what's to come. You really come to see that professors here care about your ambitions and want to help you in the process, which for me really means a lot.
