On weekends well really on sundays. Are there any religious services going on ? Are there local churches near-by the campus. I like to attend services on sundays. I hate staying in the room on a sunday morning. Can anyone let me know. Thanks... You all are great.  :D  :D

Agape Christian Ministries (which I am apart of) has a lot of events throughout the week.  We have service on Fridays in a Hopkins' building (Shaffer) at 7:30PM.  And Sunday service is away from campus but transportation is provided.  Meet at noon on Greenway (the road next to McCoy).

I personally don't go to Church, but I know that there are a TON of Churches within easy walking distance, and also a lot of Churchgoers, so you should be set =)

The mass at the IFC is the most popular among my church-going friends. It's right up the block so it's always easy to get to.

Do you think it would be easy for someone who hasn't been involved in organized religion for a few years to get back in the "habit" (heehee, a pun!) again?

I'm technically a Catholic, but had some...issues with my faith, and I'd really like to get involved again. I know it will be difficult for me to start now, as I have so much on my plate.

This may be too personal a question, but hey, I'll put it out there anyway. :)

Hey Katie -

Yeah, absolutely it's pretty easy to get involved. The religious groups on campus tend to be REALLY welcoming, both to those that are already extremely devoted and those that are discovering/rediscovering some sort of faith connection.

There are, besides services, many religious-based activities...the Catholic Community (a student group) has an affiliation with the Newman House, for instance. Hillel is really active for the Jewish community. So there are informal get-togethers and service projects that can allow you to reaquaint yourself with the religious community.

I am a part of Hopkins' Intervarsity Christian Fellowship...and I love it. I came to one meeting and everyone was so welcoming...the people in this group are some of my closest friends. We have Bible studies and a large group meeting during the week, and on Fridays we usually have some kind of social gathering. Every Sunday there is a trip to Faith Christian Fellowship Church, which is a 15 min walk or 4 min drive from campus. This weekend we are going on a retreat, and I am so excited!

I also LOVE the Gathering at 7pm, which is across the street at University Baptist as Kate said. It's student run and is such a nice service

My point is, as everyone else has said, there are a ton of religious opps here on campus, whether you want to learn more about the faith or you want to further your spirituality.

What I have realized, personally, I cannot do this college thing without spiritual guidance...and contrary to popular belief, spirituality does not always die in college!

And I realize this topic is old haha but hopefully that helped someone. :)

I want to add a Jew shout-out to this thread. There is a strong Jewish community on campus. There are always things going on at the Hillel from actually services, to movie nights, to Latke vs. Hamentashen debates.
Since my name is Esther I always make a point of attending the Purim celebration. It's been fun every year I've gone!

Not to mention that huge Sukkah house in front of FFC! [Did I spell that correctly?]
Students were making graham cracker sukkah houses in there all last week! =]

Latkes definitely beat hamentashens.  Hands down.

Hillel has a ton of programs, like Esther was saying.  They even run a group for a Birthright trip to Israel every intersession.  It's free so if you are eligible, you should definitely consider it!

I figured I'd give information for Muslim students who want to have some place to pray. :)

The Interfaith Center is used every Friday for Jummah prayer. The khutba begins at 1:15 pm on Friday and prayers usually end by 2:00 pm.

Daily prayers, Fajr and Isha, are held in the Musallah (prayer room) in the IFC as well.

There are also various masjids around the Baltimore area which can be found here. Masjids

And, during Ramadan there is daily Suhoor and Iftar that are sponsored by students at the IFC where there is also Maghrib prayer and Taraweeh later in the night.

Also, Professor David is speaking about the threats to Israel's existence at Hillel tonight. Should be interesting.

Thanks Wafa!

I feared I would have no way of praying, fasting, etc at hopkins.
Now I'm relieved :)

In addition to the groups Kate mentioned, there is also a developing Lutheran campus ministry.  It's pretty small, as the Lutheran congregation is generally composed of an older demographic, but it seems to be grower each semester.

The Lutheran group meets once a week for lunch on campus for about an hour to relax and discuss passages from the Bible.  It's a good way to connect with fellow Lutherans on campus.

Every Sunday there are traditional Lutheran services at First English Lutheran Church at 39th and Charles (about a 5 minute walk from campus) at 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM, as well as a contemporary service at 9:00 AM.

Adding a bit to the Jewish aspects of this thread, Hillel has started a few cool programs that haven't been mentioned.  There's "Torah on Tap", a program where people of all faiths join at local hotspots (PJ's, Ledo's Pizza, etc.) and discuss a wide variety of things, from Jewish views on tattoos and piercings to the debate on the Islamic Community Center near Ground Zero.  It is a friendly environment, and you learn a lot by going.

In addition, JIGL (Pronounced "jiggle", Jews In Greek Life), sponsors a Shabbat dinner at one of the fraternity houses every once in a while.  It is another friendly and open environment, and I've seen several non-Jews show up to see what a Shabbat dinner is like.  The last one actually had so many people show up that they had to bring in extra tables and the entire house was packed.

I went to a Gospel Choir concert last weekend with JHU_Joseph to see one of our friends perform in and we both really enjoyed it. If it interested you, it is easy to get involved with and a great way to connect religion and music if you are musically-inclined.

So all my friends are in Gospel Choir and definitely, if anyone is interested in the musical aspect but not so sure about the spiritual aspect...it's a good choice!
