A minimum of 24 credits are necessary to transfer to Hopkins, and Hopkins will only transfer a maximum of 60 credits.

After a student enrolls at Hopkins, an official credit evaluation is performed by the Office of Academic Advising. In order to receive credit for courses, students must have earned a grade of C or above in courses comparable in content to those offered at Hopkins. Only courses taken at an accredited college or university will be accepted.

There is no way to determine the number of credits that will transfer prior to admission, enrollment, and review by the academic advising office.

Dear JHU Admission Office,

Can a college sophomore student apply as a transfer in sophomore position instead of junior standing?

I might have completed over 70 semester units before applying to JHU.

Best,
-Monirath :)

Students may transfer to Hopkins as incoming sophomores or incoming juniors. Students must have a minimum of 24 credits to be considered for transfer admissions and we will only transfer a maximum of 60 credits.

An admitted transfer student's standing is actually determined by the Academic Advising Office over the summer based on the number of credits that a student will be transferring in. A student can not make the choice of their class standing -- this determination is made by Academic Advising.

TRANSFER OF CREDITS

The following is a listing of several transfer credit-related frequently asked questions (followed by answers).  This information was obtained from the Office of Academic Advising.  Please feel free to reply with additional general transfer credit-related questions! :)

How will the credits I have earned at my current school be evaluated?
After you enroll at Johns Hopkins, an official credit evaluation is performed by the Office of Academic Advising (Arts & Sciences) or the Office of Academic Affairs (Engineering).  To receive credit for courses, you must have earned a grade of C or above in courses comparable in content to those offered at Johns Hopkins.  Only courses taken at an accredited college or university are accepted.  Transfer credit evaluations are processed when Academic Advising receives a final copy of your transcript with all grades posted.  In addition, Academic Advising will also need course descriptions for each course that you have completed at your prior institution(s).  This can be pasted together from website descriptions, course syllabi, or a college catalog.  This can be delivered via e-mail or as a hard copy.

How many of my credits will transfer?
Hopkins transfers up to 60 credits.  Academic Advising does not offer transfer credit for independent studies or internships, math below the pre-calculus level, and physical education classes.  Some classes will require evaluation by a faculty member in a related department.

Will my Advanced Placement (AP) credits transfer?
Transfer?  No.  However, if you have an official score report sent directly from the College Board to the Academic Advising Office, Hopkins will award you credit for AP scores that are accepted per the university regulations.  Please click here to review additional information regarding AP examinations and credit.

If I have more than 60 credits, do I get to pick which courses transfer?
Yes.  Most times, Academic Advising will try their best to select courses that will best help you reach your degree goals at Hopkins.  If an Academic Advisor is unclear about which courses are most appropriate, they will contact you for further assistance.

Who determines if my courses will apply to my major?
You will need to speak with the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the major (or minor) you intend to complete to determine if the course will fulfill a particular major (or minor) requirement.  DUS contact information can be found here.

Can I transfer writing intensive credits?
Yes, up to 6 credits.  Writing intensive courses will require evaluation by our Writing Center.  For additional information regarding this topic, please visit the Writing Center web site here.

Please direct specific, personal transfer credit questions to the Office of Academic Advising, (410) 516-8216 or visit the Academic Advising web site.
