Housing: Are Sophomore Transfer Guaranteed Housing?
« on: May 14, 2008, 01:08 PM »
Hey!  I just had a quick question about transfer housing-  Are transfers (I'm a rising sophomore) guaranteed housing? And if so, are they usually housed in a specific area or just placed wherever?

Thanks so much!

From our Transfer Applicant FAQ:
http://apply.jhu.edu/faqs/transfer.html

Housing is guaranteed for all sophomore transfers. Johns Hopkins also owns apartment buildings to accommodate upperclass students who desire university-owned residences. Units range in size from single rooms to four-bedroom apartments. Most units are furnished and include utilities in the price of the rent. There is also an abundance of privately owned housing within walking distance of campus.

So yes we guarantee housing for any enrolling sophomore transfer students. Transfer students will rarely live in freshman housing and as best as possible the Housing Office will try to arrange so transfer students live with other transfer students. This does not occur on all occassions though.

Also, just to quickly add to what the above posters have mentioned, the following web sites are helpful for both incoming sophomore and junior transfer students:

On Campus Housing Office: On Campus Housing

Off-Campus Housing Office: Off-Campus Housing

Campus Dining: Campus Dining

Also, all Hopkins students, including transfers living on and off campus, are eligibile to ride both the Hopkins Escort Van Service, the Hopkins Shuttles, which travel to various locations within the city, including the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Colltown Shuttle, which travels to many neat places, including the Towson Mall Center, the Inner Harbor, and Penn Station (train service).

Some information about the Escort Van Service: Escort Van Web Site

We provide a safe, effective means for Hopkins students and affiliates to travel between their residences and campus. Service is limited to within one mile of the center of campus. Service is free to all Hopkins students and affiliates holding a valid Johns Hopkins ID. During the regular academic year, van services are available seven days a week from 5:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. On weekends, Yellow Bus Company provides an additional on-demand service in Charles Village. This service is available between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

Between all of the available shuttles, a car, (unless you live pretty far away from campus), is virtually unnecessary. :)

I came in as a sophomore transfer student and was housed in McCoy Hall with two other transfer girls in the same suite.

I too was housed in McCoy as a transfer last year with a transfer roommate and 2 more transfers down the hall. As far as I know, the only other first-time-transfers were in Wolman Hall.
