Hi Prince, I am a psychology transfer student as well! Just to follow up on Daniel’s rather comprehensive, information-packed post, I agree, the Psychology Major Checklist is a helpful tool to utilize and follow throughout your tenure at community college.
While there aren’t any courses that are “required” for transfer admission, I did find it quite helpful that I had completed the following courses at my home institution prior to transfer, which provided me with the opportunity to begin upper-level courses in Psychology once I arrived at Hopkins…
1)
Introductory-level psychology courses – you will need to complete e courses in this area for the psychology major, courses like “Introduction to Psychology” or “Developmental Psychology,” etc. If you can get those out of the way at your home institution, it will be easier to enroll in upper level courses once you arrive at Hopkins, since most of these courses have intro-level prerequisites.
2) I would probably recommend skipping a
Biopsychology/Physiological Psychology course at community college, and waiting until you arrive at Hopkins – the professor at Hopkins is amazing and you will definitely learn a lot more detailed information about pathways, systems, etc. which will be helpful if you decide to take a few upper-level combination psychology/neuroscience courses at Hopkins.
3)
Calculus I or Linear Algebra – try to begin the mathematics requirements at community college, it will most likely be easier and less time consuming than taking these at Hopkins.
4)
Statistical Analysis I and II – both courses are required for the psychology major, if you can take a beginner/introductory level course at your current institution, it will provide you with an excellent foundation for Stats at Hopkins.
(Disclaimer: again, these are just my recommendations, and are not required courses for transfer admission.)
Importantly, note, while you can transfer up to
60 credits from your prior institution once you arrive at Hopkins to cover general “distribution requirements,” you can only transfer in
12 credits to your major, psychology. Meaning you will only get psychology credit for 3-4 courses, so select your courses at your home institution wisely!
